About this ebook
The Connection Between Leptin and Leptin Resistance
Leptin is a protein hormone that is released by fat cells in order to regulate appetite and metabolism. It was discovered in 1994 by Jeffrey M. Friedman at Rockefeller University. Since then, it has helped doctors learn more about obesity and its relationship with leptin resistance.
When released in high levels, leptin reduces appetite and sets of the fat burning process by signaling the brain. However, in low levels, it will make a person feel hungry and eat food, as well as store energy from food.
When a person’s brain becomes resistant to the signals issued by leptin, a person is said to become leptin resistant.
How does this happen?
A leptin-resistant person will continue to eat even when energy reserves have been topped up, thus causing accumulation of fat leading to obesity. On the other hand, a person who is leptin sensitive will have control over their hunger, metabolism and fat storage.
In this book, we are going to help you figure out how and why you may have become leptin resistant. And how you can get your body back to the delicate balance of healthy leptin production and your brain getting the right signals. Health sciences have recently found ways in which to turn this greatest enemy into your best friend.

These minor changes in your lifestyle are going to give you power over your weight and your body.
If you take a closer look at the science of it all, knowing more about a simple 16-kDa adipokine molecule, also called Leptin, is going to put you on the right track towards a healthier lifestyle.

In this book, you will also find the list of foods that you can eat, the list of foods that you can eat in moderation, and the list of foods that you should absolutely avoid at all costs. We have also included some tips and valuable pieces of advice to help you get used to this new lifestyle.

Foreword
Leptin is considered to be one of the major hormones that are responsible for maintaining balance inside of our bodies. Leptin is known to play a vital role in the regulation of metabolism, appetite and food intake. It functions by working as an:
* Appetite Suppressor – Whenever the body has sufficient amounts of energy reserves (such as body fat), Leptin signals the brain to suppress the person’s cravings for food.
* Metabolism Regulator – Leptin also controls the amount of fat that is stored as well as the amount that is consumed by the body. Such a balance directly affects a person’s food intake.
Leptin works in conjunction with leptin receptors in order to curb excessive eating; however, an elevation in Leptin levels, along with obesity, tends to make a person leptin-resistant.
Thus, whenever a person has high levels of leptin as a result of overeating, the lack of regulation of leptin receptors may make the person less sensitive to this vital hormone, thereby increasing the risk of obesity. There are many Leptin supplements being sold over the Internet as well as over the counter at drug stores. However, taking those supplements is not going to help you shed pounds and burn fat just because you are loading your body with the artificial version of the hormone. What you need is to coax your body into naturally producing this hormone on its own.
In this book, we are going to help you figure out how you can get your body to achieve this seemingly impossible task of getting the body to produce appropriate levels of Leptin. Health sciences have recently found ways in which to turn this greatest enemy into your best friend.
As you go through this book, you will gain an in-depth understanding of how Leptin affects your diet, and how you can gain more control over this essential hormone.

Section 1: Understanding the Connection
In order to treat a disease successfully, we must first know what the disease is and what causes it. More often than not, we end up treating only the symptoms while the underlying problem lingers on. It may even begin to deteriorate over time and could perhaps reach a point where treatment becomes difficult, or even impossible.
For instance, a runny nose helps our body clean infections from the upper respiratory system. When we consume decongestants, we do not only ease the apparent symptoms of the flu, but the drug also targets the underlying problem that is the root of the illness. The symptoms of various diseases are our body’s way of warning us about diseases. Some of the most common diseases such as arthritis, osteoporosis, obesity, diabetes, heart diseases, and numerous autoimmune diseases are actually the chronic symptoms of growing old (aging).
We often get so engulfed with the symptoms of various aging disorders that we fail to treat the root cause of the illness.
In some cases, the treatment is even more harmful than the disease itself. It is of little consequence if ten studies show that a drug will decrease your risk of developing heart disease if it can increase the risk of cancer or other symptoms of aging. What we really need to study is its effect on the rate of mortality – and, therefore, aging.
Reality of Longevity of Life
Most of what we know about longevity has been derived from the studies done on animals and humans who break the age barriers of their species. The notion of longevity varies from species to species. A fly may live for only a few days, mice might live for a couple of years, and dogs might live for a decade or two. Humans have the potential to live as long as 120 years, but few people around the world actually live that long. The average human life expectancy today is approximately 80 years, and can be even lower in many parts of the world.
They may be few in numbers, but there are people who live past 100 years old. These centenarians are scattered throughout the world and are living proof for scientists who want to unravel the secret of long life. If scientists figure out why these individuals are living so long then they can use this information to increase the lifespan of everyone.
Longevity of life is not just about being lucky for winning a genetic lottery; it is much more than that. This is something great because it means that if the right measures are taken to lengthen the lifespan of an average human, we may be able to control our own genetic makeup and destiny in ways scientists have been controlling the life span of animals in laboratories for decades.
Laboratory animals are kept on nutritionally-complete, but calorie-restricted diets and they also prove to be a rich source of information on how to increase the lifespan of their own species. Since the 1930s,
