About this ebook

I am the warlock Laine. After the battle against my mother and creator, Saradaya, my powers have been banished from me. For my wife, Crystal

    who seems to understand

    the crazy writer vibe

Water dances over my feet, lapping at my ankles. Daylight, barely seen on the horizon, beckons to my eyes. I open them, surprised to see another day. My body aches, bruised and bloody, a few broken bones adding sharper agony to the mix. I try to heal myself, draw spells from my stones. Nothing. Nothing left.

I sit up, limbs protesting. My aura was shattered. Saradaya had destroyed everything I was.

    But I wasn't dead.

    Yet.

I fished around my pockets, pulled out my cell phone, dialed emergency. A brief description of the beach and a completely fictional story about a paragliding accident summons an amulance, several trained EMTs, and plenty of painkillers. I don't remember the ride to the hospital, I don't remember the operations, the day spent in recovery. It's not even a blur, just gone.

Sage is waiting for me when I wake, my emergency contact. I can't feel his aura, can't see the colors I've come to know as him. I'm trapped with only the physical awareness, a muffled muted existance. He looks tired, worried... smiles when my eyes focus on him.

Just so you know, I don't for one second believe this is a paragliding accident.

I laugh, a snort really, the only sound I get out before the pain comes spiking over my ribs.

Don't move too much! You aren't in very good shape, right now. But you are healing, the doctors say it looks good. And I've been casting for you, all the healing spells I know.

That's when I break down, tears and crying over my lost. Sage
