About this ebook

This is part of a series of books in which particular verses are picked from books of the bible, and the issues of Life in the Spirit are explored, in the light of the mind of God for us.

In this book, we explore six topics, from different verses in the books of Mark and Luke. They are: Speaking with new tongues; The offering of prayer, praise and service; The Holy Spirit; The gift of the Holy Spirit; The Holy Spirit will teach you; and Be alert.

Excerpts:

Speaking with new tongues

“For the baptism of the Holy Spirit, you utter things beyond your understanding, activating the experience of baptism in the Holy Spirit as you express faith in Jesus as baptiser in the Holy Spirit.”

The offering of prayer, praise and service

“The writer to the Hebrews wrote of serving God acceptably. And he hinges this on the grace of God (Hebrews 12:28). That was the factor that Paul said marked his ministry apart (1Corinthians 15:10). As he said, we differ according to the grace given to us (Romans 12:6); and we can offer unique services to God, The fact that a service may or may not be acceptable shows that ultimately it is not so much the people that we serve; it is God, and he determines the acceptability. And there are two things that determined the acceptability: grace of God and the will of God, the grace of God his divine ability in us and used in the direction of the will of God, who is the ultimate judge of the quality of your service.”

The Holy Spirit

“God the father, through the prophets, and the laws of Moses, laid the framework for the redemption through the blood of Jess that will be shed, and the Holy Spirit applied that work to the heart of people bringing them to God. Jesus said the importance of the Holy Spirit lies in his ability to convict of sin, of judgment and righteousness (John 16:7-11).”

The gift of the Holy Spirit

“Throughout the New Testament, what we see is people speaking in tongues on receiving the gift of the Holy Spirit. Once this understanding is faulty in you, then you compromise your ability to receive. You cannot receive the gift of a car and at the same time reject the ability to get from point A to point B faster. The gift and the effect cannot be separated. To take one is to take the other. To reject one is to reject the other.”

‘The Holy Spirit will teach you’

"John said that we should test all spirits, if they are of God (1John 4:1-3). The litmus test for spirits is whether they affirm the truth of Jesus. The Holy Spirit does not represent some esoteric truth; he leads us into the truth, Jesus (John 14:6).”

Be alert

“This is a call to commitment to spiritual growth. Peter said that we should grow in two areas: in grace and knowledge, and both are derived from Christ (2Peter 3:18).”
