William Sailor Freedman Lightweight Boxer and Jewish Criminal
()
About this ebook
William Sailor Freedman was a lightweight boxer who came to Philadelphia from Brooklyn as a runaway youth. He worked as a newsboy before he became an employee of gambler Max Hoff. In later years he resumed his connections with organized crime associates like Hoff. Hoff was a rum runner during the days of Prohibition and Freedman acted as his bodyguard and someone who did his bidding. In 1922 Sailor was arrested with an accomplice for the murder of a taxi driver in Chicago. During this time Freedman was among the most successful boxers in the lightweight division. He boxed with the likes of Mickey Walker and Benny Leonard, among many others.

Of Jewish ancestry William Friedman (June 18, 1899-January 6, 1968) came to Philadelphia as a runaway from his Brooklyn, New York home. Arriving in South Philadelphia in 1914, Freedman worked as a newsboy before he went to work in a gambling room operated by Max Hoff.
Freedman served in the United States Navy from 1915-1918. While at the Great Lakes Naval Training Station he won the bantamweight boxing title. Sailor once served a suspension for using a doctored glove in the ring. The 5'8" Freedman had a 69' reach. He turned pro in 1916 and continued boxing until 1928. Sailor was managed by Philadelphia's Max Boo Boo Hoff, a Jewish Prohibition-era bootlegger.
While in Chicago on July 23, 1922 Freedman was alleged to have been involved in the murder of taxicab driver Abraham Rubin. The driver had ties to transporting bootleg liquor.
Following his boxing career Sailor Freedman resumed his underworld connections. He was said to have worked as a private drug trafficker during the time he was Max Hoff's bodyguard. He was also a
