    A Belgian born in Japan in 1967 into a family of diplomats, Amélie Nothomb spent her childhood and adolescence between Asia and the United States, according to her father’s assignments.

    She graduated in Roman Languages and Literature at the Université Libre de Bruxelles. After a failed attempt at returning to Japan, she published her first novel, Hygiene and the Assassin in 1992 and began a writing career resulting in many novels published at regular intervals. Nothomb depicts herself in several of her short novels, which often tell the story of troubled relationships between a victim and a tormentor. Dialogue is her favorite form of expression.
