About this ebook

This book is about changing your life by changing the way you approach one of the largest parts of your life; the time you spend at work. Most of us spend more of our waking hours at work than any other place in our lives and, as a result, the time we spend at work shapes our lives – for better or worse. There are three main, prevailing beliefs regarding work: 1) I have to work, 2) It's stupid, and 3) I can't change it. These beliefs render us victims, not only at work, but in our "real" lives, as well. See, the longer you play a victim, the better victim you become. People who spend more of our waking hours at work than any other place in our lives and, as a result, the time we spend at work shapes our lives – for better or worse.People who practice these beliefs play the victim 40 hours per week, 50 weeks per year, for 40 years, or more, and, as a result, become very good victims. And the worst part is that these beliefs (1) I have to work, 2) It's stupid, and 3) I can't change it) are not true.

In this book, I refute each of these self-defeating beliefs and show how we can use the time we spend at work for self-improvement instead of self-victimization. Work is not a perfect place but it is a perfect opportunity to improve your life. Try it. It takes less than an hour to read and costs less than 4 bucks. Following are the chapter titles:

    Dedication

This book is dedicated to the memory of Dick Toth – a wonderful human being who lived life to its fullest.

    Preface

My aim in writing this book is to help people look at work a little differently. I am concerned that most people view their jobs in a way that is detrimental to their quality of life and, hence, is not in their best interest. My hope is that, if people can look at work a little differently, they might be able to look at life a little differently, as well.

    Introduction

Destiny is not a matter of chance, it is a matter of choice; it is not a thing to be waited for, it is a thing to be achieved.

    William Jennings Bryan (1860 – 1925)

This is a book about self-improvement. Persons interested in books dealing with the improvement of people other than themselves might be interested in my upcoming book, I’m OK, You I’m Not So Sure About.¹ But that’s another book. This book is about self-improvement. And towards that end, I’d like to examine what I believe to be the greatest opportunity to practice self-improvement in our lives – the time we spend at work.

Why is the time we spend at work important? Indeed, is it important at all? Well, that depends on how much time we spend at work. If you only work a few hours a week (or less), I would recommend focusing your self-improvement efforts elsewhere – preferably wherever you spend the most time. But for most of us, work is that place. We spend more of our waking hours at work than
