Introduction

If you are a teenager reading this book, or even if you are an adult with a teenager in the family, here are some words written by naturally, a parent – “The children of our times are rebellious. They take no heed to anything told to them by their elders, and nor do they take any advice. They believe that nothing can happen to them, and they will not listen to reason. And worst of all, they know not how to behave in the presence of their elders, or even to dress in a fitting manner.”

Sounds familiar or so ho-hum, so what is new ? Believe it or not, these words were written 3,000 years ago by a Roman philosopher who had written them after a slight argument and discussion with his 11-year-old son!

    Introduction

If you are a teenager reading this book, or even if you are an adult with a teenager in the family, here are some words written by naturally, a parent – The children of our times are rebellious. They take no heed to anything told to them by their elders, and nor do they take any advice. They believe that nothing can happen to them, and they will not listen to reason. And worst of all, they know not how to behave in the presence of their elders, or even to dress in a fitting manner.

Sounds familiar or so ho-hum, so what is new ? Believe it or not, these words were written 3,000 years ago by a Roman philosopher who had written them after a slight argument and discussion with his 11-year-old son!

The term teens- as an age, when children decide that they are responsible enough to make their own decisions, and do not want any adult interference, was coined in the early 19th century, as the age of youth/adolescence.

If you, as a teenager were born 3,000 years ago in Rome, you would have been considered an adult at the age of 14. You would have been given your man’s toga, and treated like an adult. If you were a girl, you would have been treated like a woman, and your mother would have been searching for a good match for you in the neighborhood. Remember Juliet? She was 14. Romeo must have been around 17 or so, but one could see by his behavior that he was a typical teenager, crazy for Rosalind one day, and the next day obsessed with Juliet.

But then, this was the Italy, of the Middle Ages, where the average lifespan of a human being was around 25 – 30, and if he managed to survive sickness, wars, and death, poison and assassination, it was possible that he could manage to live up to his 50s – 60s. In the Middle East, 11 years old was considered the age of adulthood! It looks quite shocking to us now, but then you should understand the life expectancy of people at that time was
