In memory of my beloved mother who taught me to love all animals – especially dogs.
Chapter 1
Steven wished he had stayed home.
On the bus, everyone in his fifth-grade class was excited and talking about their first field trip of the year, laughing and joking with each other.
They don’t even notice me,
Steven thought. He wished the other kids liked him. He was new and shy and he hadn’t made one friend.
He pulled out his wallet to look at the picture of himself with his best friend. He and Bob had known each other since they were five years old. Steven wished he could find another best friend. All his friends in Illinois had always been nice to him. He was very happy – until last summer. Until his father’s job made them move to Southern California. Steven spent his tenth birthday moving into a strange house in a new neighborhood where home didn’t seem like home anymore. His teacher continued, Now, let’s stick together. I don’t want anybody wondering off, ya hear?
Steven watched the other kids pile out of the bus and run toward an office building. Boy, how he wished he was back in Illinois.
Come on, Steven,
Mrs. Moore called. Keep up with the rest of the children.
Steven trailed behind, hanging his head.
Once inside, they were greeted by a lady. Welcome to Dogs for People. I’m Janet and I’ll be your tour leader. To begin at the beginning, Dogs for People breeds and trains guide dogs.
She explained, "And as you know, guide dogs lead
