      Acknowledgements

      I used to rarely read the acknowledgments, but in recent years, I find myself paying attention, aware that nobody works in isolation not only because of the work and advice of others, but also because we are, to coin a phrase Thich Nhat Hanh often uses, interconnected.

      There is a genealogy of Jesus in the first chapter of Matthew in the New Testament: Abraham, Isaac, Jacob, Judah. Perez… Boaz the father of Obed, whose mother was Ruth, and Jacob the father of Joseph, the husband of Mary, and Mary was the mother of Jesus who is called the Messiah. (Matthew 1: 1-17).

      This long lineage makes me remember the many people, not by blood but by spirit who have influenced and taught me. I am indebted to and inspired by the contemplative wisdom of Henri Nouwen, the theological discernment of Joan Chittister, and the Christian teachings of CS Lewis.

      Many other people have been my teachers too, people who never got any public acclaim. I give thanks to Bob Bradley, the Disciples of Christ minister who baptized me and taught me a Christian worldview. And Reverend Wayne Watts who encouraged me and helped me have the courage to pastor a church. And then there is Bonnie Boyce, a Presbyterian minister, a strong and wise role model and friend who taught me to be authentic: she said people who come into churches must not expect immediate gratification but persist learning the language and rituals. I can attest to that. I love to sing favorite hymns many of which I had never heard until I began worshiping on a regular basis. Enlightenment is not a momentary experience of oneness, but an ongoing expansion in awareness and compassion for all of humanity and all of creation.

      Many wise ministers, spiritual leaders, and professors have taught me in their writings and their sermons, but I cannot forget all the non-religious writers either, from icons of
