A Greater Intimacy
Intimacy: noun, plural intimacies.
1. the state of being intimate.
2. a close, familiar, and usually affectionate or loving personal relationship with another person or group.
3. a close association with or detailed knowledge or deep understanding of a place, subject, period of history, etc.
4. an act or expression serving as a token of familiarity, affection, or the like.
5. an amorously familiar act; liberty.
6. sexual intercourse.
7. the quality of being comfortable, warm, or familiar.
8. privacy, especially as suitable to the telling of a secret.

Intimacy, as you can see from the above definition, is more than physical. In fact, physical intimacy is not referenced until the sixth definition. I want to look at the second and third definitions, today. The second deals with relationships and the third with knowledge. Let's look at relationships first.
But when the Pharisees heard that He had silenced the Sadducees, they gathered together. Then one of them, a lawyer, asked Him a question, testing Him, and saying, Teacher, which is the great commandment in the law?
Jesus said to him, ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your mind.’ This is the first and great commandment. And the second is like it: ‘You shall love your neighbor as yourself.’ On these two commandments hang all the Law and the Prophets.
– Matthew 22:34-40
The Bible has a lot to say about relationships but it can all be boiled down to the two commandments that Jesus cites in the above text. Love God and love others. Easy! Cake! Well, sort of anyway. OK, maybe not. What say we focus on the easy relationships, God and our Spouse? Both are generally easy to love. But, did you know that you can increase your intimacy with both simultaneously? How?
you ask. Good question.
Prayer. Prayer is conversation between you and God. If you and your spouse pray together it becomes communication between the three of you. It brings each of you closer to the Lord and closer to each other at the same time. It also allows you each to understand the others relationship with their Lord. Setting aside a time to pray together as a couple may be difficult with your differing schedules but it is a beautiful way to get inside each others' spiritual life.
The third definition is to do with knowledge. Knowledge is gained in two ways, experience and study. Let's talk about the second of those.
All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, thoroughly equipped for every good work.
– II Timothy 3:16-17
Study. I've done whole talks on Study. What it is and what it can and should be. I won't go into that here, but I do want to focus on studying the Bible with your spouse. There are numerous people who have advocated family Bible studies to train up your children
. I think that that is a great thing, however, I also believe you should have Bible studies with just your spouse as well. As with prayer, this is communication between God and the two of you. In addition to deepening the relationship between the pair of you and God it also increases your knowledge. You learn about the Lord's plan from his words and you learn about your spouse by how they understand the things the Lord has to say in His Word.
My wife and I will cuddle up in bed, take turns reading the Bible, and whatever devotional material we are using in addition, and then lay there and discuss things. I have noticed that I feel closer to both her and the Lord (not necessarily in that order) in these moments and she says much the same about them. I also find that I miss them when our schedules pull us in directions that limit our time together.
Praise the Lord!
Praise God in His sanctuary;
Praise Him in His mighty firmament!
Praise Him for His mighty acts;
Praise Him according to His excellent greatness!
Praise Him with the sound of the trumpet;
Praise Him with the lute and harp!
Praise Him with the timbrel and dance;
Praise Him with stringed instruments and flutes!
Praise Him with loud cymbals;
Praise Him with clashing cymbals!
Let everything that has breath praise the Lord.
Praise the Lord!
– Psalm 150
Praise. If you've been paying attention you probably see a pattern here. Praise, like study and prayer, is communication between the praising person and the object of their praise. Every relationship book I've ever read has stressed the importance of communication. Intimacy is, therefore, all about communication whether it is verbal or not.
Spend time with your spouse, praising the Lord. The increasing closeness with the Lord and your spouse is worth it. Plus, you can learn so much about a person by how they praise God, from whom all their blessings flow.
You are probably wondering how you can schedule time for all of these with the busy schedules that this rush, rush, rushing world has you wrapped up in. Easy, combine all three into one session. It doesn't even have to be every day. Of course, I think that eventually you may choose to make it so.
Hang Up Your Apron and Wait Upon the Lord
To everything there is a season,
A time for every purpose under heaven:
A time to be born,
And a time to die;
A time to plant,
And a time to pluck what is planted;
A time to kill,
And a time to heal;
A time to break down,
And a time to build up;
A time to weep,
And a time to laugh;
A time to mourn,
And a time to dance;
A time to cast away stones,
And
