About this ebook
The climate is ruined. Cycles of torrential rain and snow alternate with heat waves that make it dangerous to be outdoors for long. Most of the farmable land is either underwater from rising oceans or destroyed in the severe weather cycles. Food is in short supply, and Beni Oligowma controls the distribution of what there is in his local area. Grocery store owners Frank and his father have to live with whatever Beni decides is fair. And that usually means Frank can’t afford the best that’s available. When a university student returns home with an experimental method that may provide a new way to grow food, Frank is determined to help the system succeed, even if it means a confrontation with Beni.
“Feed My People” is a short story, set in a dystopian science fiction world.

She enjoys taking bits and pieces of folk tales and myths and braiding them together into a new idea. Sometimes, she bends the edges of the myth to push or pull it in a new direction. People are the linchpin of it all. She enjoys creating characters that come to life and may become friends (or enemies!) of yours. Most of all, she tries to tell a good story that all readers can enjoy. She also blogs several times a week at makropp.com. When not writing she is often found serving as Chief Scorekeeper for International Chili Society chili competitions, where she cooked competitively for a number of years. She has also been accused of reading anything and everything that comes in front of her eyes: books, old newspapers, cereal boxes, and, yes, even the instruction manuals that come with things. Most of all she enjoys eating good food, drinking good wine and other spirits, and spending time with good people. Look, Frank, I can’t help you.
Beni Oligowma stood at the rear of the long truck backed up to the warehouse loading dock. He was talking to a man standing inside the truck, pushing a loaded pallet jack into place. I have other customers. And everyone needs more food. I only have so much to go around.
Frank cranked the pallet to the floor of the truck, and slid the long arms of the jack out. He rested an arm on the handle of the jack and looked at Beni.
You mean you have customers that will pay more than I can afford to, right?
Beni shrugged. Business, Frank. Nothing personal.
He walked away, leaving Frank to finish loading the rest of the small group of pallets on the warehouse floor near his truck. Frank finished and strapped the jack in place. He closed the rear door and locked it, and walked out the side door of the warehouse. He stopped at the bottom of the stairs and looked down the line of docks. Every one had a truck at it, each loading whatever amount of food Beni decided to sell
