Mary Ford-Grabowsky

Mary Ford-Grabowsky is an award-winning writer, editor, and teacher with a specialty in the world's mystical traditions. Her publications include inspirational books, such as Prayers for All People and Sacred Poems and Prayers of Love, and many essays and scholarly articles. After receiving a master of divinity degree and a doctorate in theology and spirituality from Princeton Theological Seminary, she taught in the religious studies department of Regis College, later returning to Princeton to become editor of Fellowhsip in Prayer. In 1995 she moved to California at the invitation of the Episcopal theologian Matthew Fox to become vice president and academic dean of the Universtiy of Creation Spirituality in Oakland, where she today serves as a member of the adjunct faculty and board. Among honors she has received are an award from the ecumenical branch of the World Council of Churches for distinguished service in interfaith work. A translater who studed Spanish in Mexico and German, French, and Italian in Europe, she has been collecting and translating prayers for many years and is currently preparing a book of women's prayers for publication.     Introduction

    When I was seventeen and in my first semester of college, my French teacher, Sister Juan, who was more impassioned for God and life and beauty than anyone I had ever known, was also my dorm mother. This meant she lived on my floor, and I could drop in to talk to her when I needed to. The door was always open.

    One evening when I was returning from dinner with a mountain of work to do, I noticed her at her desk poring over a huge book of lush pictures, and I stopped to ask what they were about (mostly to delay studying as long as possible). She turned to invite me in, and I was startled to see the expression on her face. She looked transported. Enraptured. Like someone who has been praying for a long time and is seeing into eternity.

    I sat down, and we began looking at pictures of Mary, the mother of Jesus, that took my breath away. As we slowly went through the book, pausing to talk about the images, I felt wonder rising in myself and a faint realization that something very powerful and unusual was happening. A remark from one of the mystics came to mind. It was tender and beautiful and very simple: See how your eyes shine when you talk about divine things. And here I was, in the sight of shining blue eyes, wondering if my own looked the same, and marveling that the quiet process of getting to know Mary had drawn Sister Juan and me into such closeness with each other and with
