The childbirth experience in India is indisputably far removed from the childbirth experience anywhere else in the world. Consequently it is critical to address the needs, alleviate the concerns and assuage the fears that every Indian mother (and father)-to-be inexorably undergoes during the process of pregnancy and childbirth. Most guidebooks in book stores are by foreign authors, and more often than not it is not easy to correlate with the information therein. The need of the hour was an Indian book, by Indian experts, for expectant Indian parents!
Written by two experienced gynaecologists, Dr. Duru Shah and Dr. Safala Shroff and Ivor Vaz, Fetal Attraction is a classic one-stop-resource to pregnancy, labour, and early childbirth. You’ll find all the answers here to the most frequently asked questions before, during, and after pregnancy. Carefully styled to equip you with everything you need to know on the subject, this up-to-the-minute manual also takes into account the latest medical developments as well as changes in the modern women’s attitudes and lifestyles.

Dedication
This book is dedicated to the millions of girls in India who have not been given an opportunity to be born – to see and live in this beautiful world!
Where have all the girls gone?
The practice of prenatal sex determination followed by selective female fetus abortion is one of the most striking examples of how advances in science and technology are being misused. The Pre-Conception and Pre-Natal Diagnostic Techniques Act and Rules 1994 (PCPNDT) mandates that sex selection by any person, by any means, before or after conception, is prohibited and is a criminal offense. Still today, in India, about 2 million fetuses are killed every year through abortion, simply because they are girls!
In this age when women have taken a step forward in almost every field, there still exist parents who commit this crime. Women are under tremendous social pressure to produce male heirs. With the use of low-cost technologies like ultrasound, doctors are helping such parents in this heinous activity leading to an increasingly smaller percentage of girls born each year.
This is a national shame
As President of the Federation of Obstetric and Gynecological Societies of India (FOGSI) in 2006, an Obstetrician and Gynecologist by profession and also a mother of two loving daughters, my endeavor is to spread this message all over the country!
Let us celebrate the birth of our daughters!

God's Masterpiece
From graceful lilies pure and white,
God fashioned lovely skin,
Forget-me-nots He chose for eyes,
Then formed your baby chin.
He took a tulip bright and red —
'Twas one that did not fade;
A softer, sweeter little mouth
Before was never made.
Another flower next He used —
A rosebud, pink and fair;
Touched it to your dimpled cheeks
And bade it blossom there.
Then with His magic fingers picked
Two morning glories white;
Curled and shaped your little ears,
Soon they were fastened tight.
That crowning bit of golden down
Will soon become your hair;
He gathered pollen from the flowers,
And sprinkled it with care.
For dainty little fingers dear
And precious, tiny toes,
He used slender daisy frills;
A snowdrop made your nose.
This world and all within it
He created here for man;
But Baby was God's Masterpiece
Since time and life began!

Acknowledgements
I'd like to profusely thank Dr. Safala Shroff and Ivor Vaz, my co-authors, without whom this book was inconceivable, and perhaps even unthinkable. Last year they collaborated with me to write A Genealogy Of Generations: The History of MOGS, an avant-garde coffee table book, which received lots of critical acclaim. Therefore it was only appropriate that we regrouped and pooled our talent, knowledge and special skills on this project. Like me, they are both utterly committed to the cause of making birth better for women everywhere.
A special thanks to our publisher Akash Shah – for believing in the project and backing it; R.H. Sharma, Steven Pinto and the rest of the team at Jaico – for their unflagging enthusiasm; our designer J.P. Tiwari – who kept Safala and Ivor in splits through those endless days and sleepless nights of page-making; Farida and my staff at the clinic – for their continuous backend support; my sister-in-law, Mrs. Meera Shah for her inputs and finally my patients – for inspiring me to write the book and providing me heaps of baby pictures. It's been a privilege, honour and joy working with all of you!
I think it's fair enough to say that Fetal Attraction: Everything Indian Parents-To-Be Need to Know About Pregnancy & Childbirth is our painstaking labour of love. Our only prayer is that this little 'baby' of ours will bring smiles to thousands of mothers in India like yourself; that it will be your constant companion through pregnancy, childbirth and postpartum; and that like, your own baby, it will continue to grow and grow and grow...
About the Author
Dr. Duru Shah (MD, FCPS, FICS, FICOG, DGO, DFP, FICMCH) is a versatile and multifaceted individual. Besides being an established author, reputed educator, certified researcher and active crusader, she also happens to be one of the most respected obstetricians in India. Recognised globally as an expert on women's health, Dr. Shah was honoured with the prestigious Fellowship of the College of Physicians and Surgeons and a gold medal. Her dynamic contribution in the field of obstetrics, gynaecology and women's reproductive health has also fetched her Fellowships of the International College of Surgeons, the Indian College of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and the Indian College of Maternal and Child Health.
Fetal Attraction: Everything Indian Parents-To-Be Need to Know About Pregnancy & Childbirth marks the fulfilment of her long-cherished dream to write a wholesome Indian pregnancy book for Indian parents-to-be. Prior to Fetal Attraction, she authored A Genealogy Of Generations: The History of MOGS, an avant-garde coffee table book on the history of the Mumbai Obstetric & Gynecology Society from its inception in 1934, hand in hand with the history of the city of Mumbai. This Book received a lot of critical acclaim. Her other pregnancy book, The Miracle of Life, was also very well received. In addition, she has contributed several articles for women in magazines, newspapers and scientific articles in reputed journals at the national and international level, besides writing and editing numerous textbooks in her field, for postgraduates.
Born in aamchi Mumbai, Dr. Shah is the third sibling in a family of five. She has also been an Honorary Professor in her field with Grant Medical College and is currently a Consultant with Breach Candy Hospital, Jaslok Hospital, Sir Hurkisondas Hospital and Central Railway Hospital. As a teacher of repute, she has trained a number of young obstetricians and gynaecologists, some of who have gone on to make a mark internationally.
Dr. Shah's distinguished career has propelled her to heights of recognition. In January 2006 she will take over as President of the Federation of Obstetric and Gynaecological Societies of India (FOGSI), which comprises of 20,000 obstetricians from all over the country. She is Honorary Secretary of the Indian College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, and an Executive Member of the Governing Council of the Indian Menopause Society besides being a member of various national and international associations of obstetrics and gynaecology.
Despite her frenetic professional career, Dr. Shah is an active crusader for women's reproductive health and women's rights. She is deeply attached to her brainchild, 'Kishori', an adolescent empowerment project conducted by FOGSI in collaboration with UNICEF, Sion Hospital, ICDS & SNEHA in the urban slums of Dharavi. She has initiated the 'Growing Up Programme' for teenagers, wherein she and her team of over 300 gynecologists all over the country train school and college girls to deal with menstruation, reproductive and sexual health and contraception.

Introduction
You must be crazy if you're contemplating writing a book on pregnancy and childbirth!
That's what friends, and colleagues in my line of work, told me when I began research work for Fetal Attraction: Everything Indian Parents-To-Be Need to Know About Pregnancy & Childbirth. Sagacious counsel from well-meaning friends, for sure. In today's cyber era, there is a superfluity of information to be found in magazines, newsletters, on TV and the Internet. Needless to add, there are over a dozen excellent handbooks available on the subject. I could have easily recommended one to my patients and saved myself the exertions of writing a book myself. But it would scarcely have served the objective. Like a baby crying for deliverance, so was this idea of writing an Indian book for Indian mothers.
It's problematical enough for a woman to sift through a mountain of information and decide for herself what's useful and what's not. Worse still, more often than not, foreign books have applicability to mothers in those settings. Consequently, we Indians are left groping in the dark at a time when we need the best advice we can possibly get. I've had scores of expectant mothers and over-expectant fathers shooting me with questions regarding the validity of advice in foreign books. I found – much to my surprise, I must admit – that there wasn't a comprehensive guidebook for the women of India. And so, I resolved to set straight the record.
First of all, congratulations on choosing this book. What you see is what you get! Fetal Attraction is a complete, one-stop guidebook for you if you happen to be pregnant, or even if you're planning to have a baby. Better still if you're an Indian mother. The book has been carefully styled to equip you with everything you need to know about pregnancy and childbirth. I have made a methodical attempt to feature 'up-to-the-minute' developments and practices in obstetrics and gynaecology, and answer the most frequently asked questions before, during, and after pregnancy. Armed with this book, you can become an active participant in what is unquestionably the most important and exciting event of your life.
As you grow and your pregnancy shows, more and more people will seize the opportunity to enlighten you with words of wisdom, most of which is guaranteed to knock you senseless. Nonetheless, this book should guide you through the wonders of childbirth as naturally as a walk in the park. So as to make your reading experience trouble-free, I have divided the book into 16 chapters, which are further divided into several subchapters. Hence in case you aren't upto devouring the book from cover-to-cover, you can rummage through whichever section you want. Fetal Attraction starts in the preconception period, a time when you can make all the required adjustments to your lifestyle before becoming pregnant. It then leads you through pregnancy and prenatal care, labour, delivery, and the postpartum period.
The main body of the book courses through the three trimesters in great depth, also covering various aspects likes physical changes, discomforts, diet, fitness, check ups and investigations. It reflects the Indian aspect of pregnancy, the role of the father and rest of the family. It is this view of birth that really distinguishes traditional birthing in India from western practices. It also covers new areas of interest to prospective parents. Since breastfeeding is something both the newborn and the mother must learn together, I have incorporated a whole chapter with detailed advice on the subject. The information has been specially designed to help you become informed about your pregnancy as well as empower you to make certain choices and discuss with your obstetrician any queries or apprehensions you may have.
For the most part, however, pregnancies in India are far, far removed from pregnancies anywhere else in the world. I'm sure you'll agree with me that the whole procedure of childbirth assumes a wholly different perspective in a country like ours. A pregnancy isn't just a pregnancy, especially if it happens to be the first in the family. It is an extraordinarily momentous event, complex and captivating and with customs and traditions, ethnicity and spirituality – even mantras and magic!
It's only in our country that you'll find distinctive rituals such as godh bharna, naamkaran and chhathi. You'll have a dozen self-proclaimed 'experts' with no medical background at all telling from one look at your belly whether it's a girl or a boy. You'll encounter beliefs that your pregnancy could be affected by eating papaya, or the occurrence of an eclipse. As a doctor, I have come across several obstetric myths and old wives' tales right through my many years of practice. I can't really pinpoint where, when or how these myths, superstitions and traditions came into being, but considering that they are so deeply weeded in the roots of our ethos, I decided to include a whole chapter on the topic called, 'It Happens Only In India'. What else could I call it?
'Daddy's Briefcase' is another one-of-a-kind chapter you're unlikely to find in most pregnancy books. Therefore I have threaded this section with suggestions as to how the father can be of immense assistance during pregnancy, labour and the postpartum period. The baby's arrival completely transforms a couple's lifestyle, and the nature of relationship they have. Like the mother, even the father faces emotional challenges,
