Joe Bob Newman

I have been writing mystery and fiction books since 1982. I have never considered having any published until now. My career has been in writing technical documents for the defense industry. By profession I am a mechanical engineer, P.E. I have six grand children.. During the summer months, I spend a lot of time in the mountains of New Mexico. Watching wildlife and observing the ecology. i also enjoy riding my 4-wheeler. I built a cabin by myself, just above a stream filled with trout, perhaps i should say am building, I have been working on it for twenty years and it is still not finished, but it is livable, it has electricity, running water and a septic system. With that, I am happy to live there in the summer months and for a week or two in the winter, but I have found that I am not much of a "snow" person.I do hope you read and enjoy my books as much as I enjoyed writing them! Thanks for visiting my page.Joe Bob Newman

    Author’s Note!

Although this book is a work of fiction, the Central Intelligence Agency, or the CIA, or The Company, is alive and well in the United States. Their charter is to provide intelligence outside the borders of the United States. In recent years, they have been known to provide intelligence inside our borders. Due to world and local terrorists, that has become the norm.

This story is about a young woman who gets a job with the CIA and immediately goes into action. After a near-death experience she gains a reputation of finding and dealing with particularly young women and girls that have been taken or kidnapped for the slave industry. It may seem strange to Americans, but the slave industry is also alive and well in the rest of the world, if not inside our own borders.

Lynda has to protect her own family from the terrorists as they come after her inside the United States. She finally has enough and takes the fight to them.

I sincerely hope that you enjoy this book and try some of my other books out.

    1C I A - The Slave Traders

Lynda Lanelle Lassiter is a modestly attractive girl who has had her fair share of boyfriends. The problem that she has had with boys is, they get too serious. She just wants to play and have fun. She is a little different than most girls; instead of cheerleading, she has been into judo and karate. She has just graduated from high school and will turn nineteen in August. She is trying hard to decide what to do next. Her dad wants her to go to a local college, but Lynda has been thinking about getting a job and moving out from home. She wants a taste of the real world, not the protected life she has led for the last eighteen years. Real jobs come hard. She has tried all year long, and the results have been less than thrilling.

Recently, she answered an ad in a magazine that said, Work for the Government, See the World, and gave a phone number. She called the number and they sent her a package full of forms to fill out. She had to enclose a picture and answer a psychological profile. Other than that job or position, she does not have any other options available. She does not want to work at a burger joint. She wants something exciting.

Everyday she would wait on the postman to see if there was an answer to her request, so far, nothing. She had gotten to know the postman very well. His name was Dennis; he was an older guy, in his early twenties. He would stop and talk to Lynda every day. She knew that he was going to ask her out. He wasn’t necessarily exciting, but he was mature to Lynda.

She was standing by the mail box in a tee shirt, shorts and tennis shoes with her blonde hair in a ponytail, when Dennis drove up. He smiled and handed her the letter. It looked official. She just held it in her hands.

Dennis said, Hey, Lynda, let’s go out and celebrate Friday night?

She wasn’t thinking straight. She said, Sure, Dennis, what time? She was fingering the flap on the envelope.

Dennis was beaming. I will pick you up at seven and we will go to dinner, okay?

She still wasn’t thinking; she said, Okay! Dennis watched her bounce back into the house. He just shook his head. He ran his right index finger over his left ring finger, and smiled.

She sat on the sofa and carefully tore the envelope open. It was from the United States Central Intelligence Agency, the CIA! It asked her to come to the Federal building in Dallas on June 24th for an interview. The time of her appointment was ten a.m..

She pulled the letter to her breasts and held it tightly. She wanted to scream out loud, but just murmured, Yes! June 24th was next Wednesday. She needed her birth certificate and her high school diploma. Then the image of Dennis’s face appeared in her mind. She had agreed to go out with him. Damn, she thought. She really did not know anything about him. He could be a serial rapist. She went and took one of her dad’s pocket knives and put it in her purse.

She showed her mother the letter, and then her dad when he came in from work. Neither smiled.

She called all her girlfriends and told them, I am about to become a woman of the world!

Each of her girlfriends squealed with delight! They all wanted her to get them a job also. Lynda realized that she was now something special. She had a lot to do in the next few days.

She did not see Dennis again until he pulled up in her driveway Friday night. He was in a light brown SUV; kinda odd, she thought. She ran out and got in the passenger door. She did not want her parents to see who she was going out with. Dennis offered her a little kiss; Lynda ignored him. Dennis was all smiles. He looked different without his postal uniform on. What was it? He looked younger, maybe more immature; she was not sure.

Dennis took her to a little hole in the wall place across town. It was an Italian joint. Dennis had three mixed drinks, and tried to give one to Lynda. She declined his offer.

After dinner he asked her about going to see a movie. She said, Sure. She just wanted the night to be over. He was not near as much fun as she had hoped.

When they got to the movie theater, Dennis bought a big box of popcorn for them to share, and two Cokes. They found the movie and Lynda sat to his left, just by coincidence. Dennis did not seem to want to share the popcorn. Which was fine with Lynda: she was still full from the meal.

After the box was empty Dennis set it down on the floor and put his left hand on her knee. She gently took his hand and put it on the arm rest. She looked at his hand. There was a white spot where a ring would go on his ring finger. It was barely noticeable. Lynda leaned over to Dennis and asked, Are you married?

He frowned and said, Yes, but we are getting a divorce. Nothing else was said between them until the movie was over.

When it was over, Dennis stood up and said, Well, that was fun. What shall we do next?

Lynda stood up. She was still stunned that she was out with a married man.

Dennis took her hand and led her out of the theater. When he got in the car, he started it up and turned the A/C on and pulled a bottle out from under the seat. He unscrewed the lid and handed it to Lynda. She shook her head. No.

Dennis said, Aw, come on, Lynda, just a sip.

She took the bottle and took a sip. She handed it back to Dennis. He guzzled a large amount and belched. He added, Excuse me!

Lynda said, Dennis, I think you had better take me home.

Dennis leaned over to her and put his hand behind her neck and pulled her across the seat and kissed her hard. Lynda pushed back hard and grabbed at her purse. She had the knife in it.

Dennis let her go, and said, Okay, okay; you’re cold as a dead fish. I just wanted a little kiss.

Lynda demanded, Dennis, take me home, now! She had her hand on the knife now.

Dennis put the car in reverse and backed out of the parking place. He said, Come on, Lynda, let’s go out to the lake and go for a swim.

Lynda had her wits about her now. She said, Dennis, I said to take me home! She was very adamant.

Dennis did not say another word, just drove her home.

Lynda was out of the car before it stopped and ran up to her porch. Dennis just watched her with a scowl on his face.

She slammed the front door, and both her mother and dad looked up from the news that they were watching on TV. Her mother asked, What’s wrong, dear?

    Lynda grimaced and said, Nothing.

She went to her room. She undressed and was on the phone to her girlfriends, warning them about Dennis.

The rest of the weekend went by quickly.

On Monday morning, Lynda and her mother went shopping for a business suit for Lynda to wear to the interview. She picked out a black skirt with a white blouse. It came with a little jacket. She bought a pair of shiny high heels, not too high though. She spent the afternoon and all day Tuesday walking in the heels, getting used to them. It would not be good to fall while on the interview. Her mother showed her how to walk and stand up straight. Lynda did everything but balance a book on her head.

Early Wednesday morning she drove to Dallas and found the Federal building. She had to pay to park.

At ten o’clock she was standing outside the office door shaking. She was scared of what might happen. What if they did not like her?

She opened the door and walked in just like her mother had showed her. An older woman sitting behind a desk smiled up at Lynda and said, Yes, may I help you?

Lynda said, I have an appointment. She handed the lady the letter.

The lady looked at the letter briefly and told Lynda, Take a seat.

Lynda took the letter back and sat down in a comfortable red chair. The lady was on the phone now, looking at Lynda as she talked. Lynda could not hear what she said. Whatever it was, it seemed bad. Lynda folded the letter up and put it in her purse. She was ready to leave quickly. She knew it was just her nerves, but she couldn’t help the fear that she felt.

An executive-looking man came through the door behind the woman; he smiled at Lynda and motioned for her to follow him. Lynda was up in a flash and walked slowly to the door and followed the man. They went down a hall and he stopped at an open door. He held out his hand to her. He said, Hi, Lynda. I am Tom Phelps. I am the Director of the office here in Dallas. She took his hand and shook it firmly, just like her mother had shown her. He pointed at a chair and she sat in it. He went to a file cabinet and got a file out. He brought it back to the desk and sat and seemed to review the file. Without looking up, he asked, What kind of a job are you looking for, Lynda?

His question caught her off-guard. She hesitated a moment, thinking, then said, I want something exciting, a job with travel. A job that takes me to places that I have never been to before!

Tom looked up at her over the file that he was holding up. He said, Good answer, when can you start?

She was ready for this one: she said, Monday.

Tom got up and said, Come with me! Lynda followed him. They went out into the hall and went to the next room. It was a break room. There were three people in it: two men and a woman. The woman was taller than Lynda, had on a miniskirt, and had red hair. She was very attractive. The two men were about Tom’s age, thirty, and were just in shirts and ties, no jackets. Tom introduced Lynda and then said, I would like you to meet some of my team. This is Bobby Hodges, Wayne Jenkins, and Marilyn Peterson.

Lynda shook each one’s hand and said, Pleased to meet you. She memorized their names.

Tom said, We are working a very difficult case and need someone that will pass as a teenager. Are you interested? Everyone was smiling at her.

Lynda smiled back and said, Sure. I just have a few questions.

    Okay, Tom said, shoot.

Lynda giggled at the phrase, and noticed that they all looked at each other. She asked, What do you guys do?

Tom went over the CIA’s duties to the country. He was patient, but they were all in a hurry to do something. He added, By the way, your starting salary is thirty-seven thousand, and you must understand, it is a twenty-four-hour-a-day job.

Lynda was thrilled and appalled at the same time. She asked another question. This is happening so fast, is it real?

They all laughed at her and Tom said, It is very real. You will have a partner. You two will be a brother and sister team. Your partner is Billy Mitchell; he will be here after lunch. It’s eleven-thirty, lets all go to the cafeteria and have lunch.

Lynda walked beside Tom. She was scared to death, but acted like she owned the place. Tom bought her lunch and the five of them all set down at a table. They talked small-talk, almost ignoring Lynda. Then another man sat at the table. He looked about eighteen to Lynda. They all greeted him as Billy. Tom introduced Lynda to him. Billy was as cute as he could be.

Lynda was surprised; she felt an attraction to Billy. Billy just had on blue jeans and a gray tee shirt. She noted that the tee shirt had holes in it.

Tom looked at Lynda. Can you start today? We really need you.

Lynda did not hesitate. She said, Absolutely!

We have to go do some paperwork, then Billy will take you home and you need to pack some teenager clothes and come back. You and Billy will fly to the coast tonight. Bobby and Marilyn will be your back-up and support team. Tom added, Are you afraid of flying?

Things were happening too fast for Lynda. She felt like she needed to take a deep breath. She did. Tom looked at her intently. Are you all right?

Lynda said, No and yes! Tom looked a little confused. Lynda went on, No I am not afraid of flying, but I have never been on an airplane, and yes, I am all right. She took another deep breath.

They all laughed at her. Lynda thought that everyone seemed to like her!

After they had all finished lunch, Billy escorted Lynda out to his car. It was a fire-engine-red Chevy Camaro. He talked continuously. He told her about the job. They were going to meet a brother and sister in Galveston. They were the children of a Sheik from the Middle East. They were to just get friendly with them for the weekend. They know me, and I told them that I was bringing my sister. They do not know that we are with the CIA. We are trying to gather intelligence on their father. You just play dumb, okay?

Lynda said, I can do that really good! Lynda was beginning to think that she and Billy had a connection. He was the kind of guy that she had been looking for all her life. He had rugged good looks, wavy hair, and had a sense of rhythm about him. She had never been so impressed with a guy in all her life. The truth was, she was very attracted to him.

Billy smiled at her. Don’t worry, you will do fine. He told her about his parents and how he had grown up, who his friends were and everything he had done. The more he talked the more Lynda was impressed with him. He was quite the man, she thought. He was wrapping up as they got to her house.

Lynda introduced Billy to her mother, and told her that she had been hired and that she was already on the job. Her mother seemed flustered.

Lynda packed her bag and took a swimsuit with her.

When they left, Billy said, We need to get you a white bikini. I want you to look ‘hot’ for Pheelar. He likes hot American girls.

They stopped at a clothes store and went in and found the smallest bikini that they could. Lynda was embarrassed to put it on. Billy scrunched his face, and said, Man, you are hot!

Lynda blushed. She was enjoying Billy staring and making eyes at her. She put on a little show for him.

They made it back to the office at about two o’clock, and Billy showed Lynda where to park. She got out of the public lot and parked in the private lot. Billy said, We have three hours to review the job, then we have to head out to the airport. A private jet will take us all to Houston. By the way, you are supposed to be sixteen, okay? You have to act young.

Lynda was taking it all in. She nodded her head yes. She acted like a kid around her daddy. She would just act the same way for this job.

They spent three hours intensely training and showing Lynda what to do, and what not to do. They helped make it easy so that she would not be so likely to make a mistake. She and Billy were to play that they were not on the best of terms with each other. That would help some. Marilyn took Lynda to a room and helped her with her make-up. She taught Lynda quite a bit in just a few minutes. Lynda was certain that she looked sixteen and even better than when she had arrived.

At five-thirty the plane with the team lifted off from Love Field and headed for Houston. Once in Houston, a helicopter would ferry them to Galveston. There, a rental car would be waiting on them. Things were happening so fast for Lynda. She was doing her best to keep it all straight.

The helicopter was waiting with its blades rotating when they landed. They all boarded it, and ten minutes later landed behind a hotel. They got out, and Billy ran for the bright red Dodge Challenger. He was in his element. He threw his bag in the backseat and motioned for Lynda to get in. They took off for Pier 21.

Billy was constantly looking at his watch.

They got to the pier quickly and located the cabin cruiser. Billy got in and unlocked the cabin door. Lynda went in and looked all around. There were two small cabins inside and a bigger cabin with a kitchen and a bathroom with a shower.

About fifteen minutes later, a black limo pulled up and two young kids got out. The boy looked to be sixteen and the girl about eighteen. Billy introduced Lynda to Pheelar and Felicia. The boy took Lynda’s hands and kissed them both. Billy did the same to Felicia.

The four kids got onto the cruiser and Billy started it up. Billy backed the cruiser out, and turned and headed for the sea wall. He cleared the jetty, and they headed out to sea. Lynda sat in the back with Felicia. Felicia spoke English fluently but Pheelar only spoke broken English. Pheelar stood right beside Billy and watched carefully everything that Billy did.

Felicia looked at Lynda and asked, You are only sixteen?

    Lynda said, Yes.

Felicia said, You look older for your age.

    Lynda said, Thank you.

Billy yelled back to Lynda, Hey, sis, go fix those sandwiches for us!

Lynda got up and went into the kitchen. She looked in the refrigerator. There were four foot-long sandwiches in it. She fixed some Cokes and then set the sandwiches out on the little table. She yelled at Billy, They are ready. Come eat!

Billy stopped the cruiser and they all went in and ate the sandwiches. They were all different, and cut into fourths. They only ate two of the sandwiches. When Billy finished eating, he said, Thanks, sis.

Lynda said, You’re welcome, Billy! He looked at her strangely. Had she made a mistake? Her heart leapt into her throat.

They went out about twenty miles and tied off to an oil platform. Billy turned on some music and brought out a bottle of rum. He and Felicia had drinks. Billy and Felicia went to the front of the cruiser and set some chairs up, and got fishing poles and started fishing. Pheelar sat down beside Lynda and waved at her. Lynda waved back.

There was something about Pheelar that Lynda just did not like. He seemed too pompous. She smiled at him, and asked, Do you go to school?

Pheelar smiled back and said, No, I have special tutors. I will enter the University this fall.

Wow, Lynda said, that sounds cool. Maybe I would do better in school if I had a tutor. Pheelar looked bored. Lynda went on, What do you do for fun?

Pheelar said, The only fun that I have is coming to America. I really like Billy. He has been very nice to me. He has told me a lot about you. I am happy to be here with you!

Lynda sort of felt sorry for the boy. She did not know what to say to him. It was starting to get dark. She asked him, Do you want to fish?

He said, No, and set there like a bump on a log. Pheelar was not highly motivated.

Lynda had forgotten what she was supposed to talk about. She finally asked, Tell me about your family?

Pheelar said, Felicia and I get moved around a lot. We are not allowed to have friends our age. That is why we come here. He spent the next twenty minutes telling Lynda about his father and everything he did. He did not mention his mother.

When he was clearly finished, Lynda said, Do you like the music? We can put something else on, if you prefer.

Pheelar went to the stereo, and thumbed through the CDs and finally said, No, this will be fine.

He walked back over and sat down by her. He said, You don’t like me, do you?

Lynda shook her head. Pheelar, I barely know you. I like you so far.

He smiled at her, and said, Let’s dance.

She got up and moved the chairs back out of the way. He took her hand and they began to dance to the slow music.

Billy peeked over the top of the cabin, seemed satisfied, and came back to the cabin and turned all the lights on. Then he went back to the front of the cruiser.

They danced to six songs, and Pheelar seemed happy. He asked Lynda, Want to go swimming?

She said, Sure, I will get my suit.

He said, No, I meant without clothes.

Lynda smiled, thinking quickly. Billy won’t let me, sorry. I have to wear a suit.

    He responded, Okay, that’s fair.

Lynda went in and changed into the little white bikini. When she came out, Pheelar had on trunks. He was waiting at the back of the boat. He smiled really wide at her. She tried not to blush.

They held hands as they jumped into the ocean. They swam around in the water for a good hour and then got out.

Lynda hurried to the shower and took her tee shirt and shorts with her. She got in the warm water and rinsed off and then dried off, and put her clothes back on. She saw Pheelar trying to get a peek at her, but she ignored him.

After she came out, he went in and took a shower. He used up all the hot water.

Lynda went into the kitchen and found some round tortilla chips, and some cheese. She got a plate and made them both some nachos. Pheelar seemed hungry, and really wolfed them down. They both had Cokes again. Billy came into the cabin with Felicia, and Lynda could smell alcohol on both their breath.

Billy whispered to Lynda, Take Pheelar to the front of the boat and keep him there for a while.

Lynda said, Pheelar, come! She held out her hand to him. He followed her like a puppy.

She took him to the front of the boat and they
