The sun had set seven times since Oshala—called the Hex—had last laid eyes on another human face. Her journey through the rocky badlands and up the steep mountain had left its marks on her scuffed boots, her aching joints, and her nearly-empty waterskin. But now, as the eighth sunset turned the sky to flame behind her, the blood-drenched light showed her a shadowed passage in the mountainside: the entrance into the ancient mountain fastness she sought.
