About this ebook

When it comes to long-distance friendships, a delayed response or no response at all can lead to plenty of hurt feelings. Cross-country pen pals Molly and Olive find that out the hard way when an unanswered gift causes Olive to go a little crazy, spinning tales of trips to Paris and dinners with royalty in an effort to make Molly jealous. Readers can follow the wild ride themselves by reading the girls' correspondence and listening to their alternating first- person points-of-view.

Olive Spins a Tale (and It's a Doozy!) - Megan Atwood

    Dear Molly, Dear Olive

Molly and Olive are best friends — best friends who’ve never met! Two years ago, in second grade, they signed up for a cross-country Pen Pal Club. Their friendship was instant.

Molly and Olive send each other letters and email. They send postcards, notes, and little gifts too. Molly lives in New York City with her mom and younger brother. Olive lives on a farm near Sergeant Bluff, Iowa, with her parents. The girls’ lives are very different from one another. But Molly and Olive understand each other better than anyone.

    Chapter 1

    Home on the Farm

    Dear Molly,

Hi! How are you? I made this for you in 4-H. It’s a picture of my farm! With seeds! In 4-H we do a lot of different things with nature, so I wanted to make you a nature picture. Do you have parks in New York City? Have you ever been on a farm? I wish you were here. I could show you how to milk cows or feed pigs. We could gather eggs.

Our rooster is really mean. But Mom and Dad say it’s good to have him here. If you ever came to visit, I’d make sure he wouldn’t hurt you.

Okay, I bet you’re real busy, so I’ll stop writing. I hope you like my picture.

I miss you! Best friends forever, right?

    Love,

    Olive

I finished writing Molly’s address and smiled. Writing New York City on the envelope made me feel special. No one else in my grade had a friend in New York. It sounded so fancy — even though Molly was not at all fancy. She’d fit right in on the farm.

Olive May! It’s time to go! my mom yelled up the stairs. When she yelled my middle name, she meant business.

I stuck a stamp on the corner of the envelope. I felt the seeds through the paper. I hoped they would stay glued. I couldn’t wait for Molly to get the picture.

Mom’s car horn made me jump. BEEEEP! I grabbed my book bag, flew through the front door, and hopped in the car.

"Mom, can you send this to
