John F Kennedy - The Truth - Martin Squire
1. Introduction
John Fitzgerald Kennedy (1917-1963) was the 35th President of the United States. Despite the fact that his presidency lasted for less than 3 years, he is widely considered to be one of the greatest U.S. presidents of all time.
Kennedy's presidency was preoccupied with the Cold War abroad and the Civil Rights Movement at home. He presided over such notable events as the founding of the Peace Corps, the Bay of Pigs Invasion, the Space Race, the Cuban Missile Crisis, the signing of the Limited Nuclear Test Ban Treaty, the Cold War, the Civil Rights Movement and the Vietnam War.
Born into a wealthy family, with powerful political connections, John F. Kennedy took over the political aspirations of his older brother Joseph Jr., who was killed in World War II. He began his political career as a congressman, representing the 11th Congressional district in Massachusetts, and served for three terms, before being elected as a U.S. Senator, representing the state of Massachusetts, in 1952.
He was re-elected for a second Senate term in 1958. John Kennedy then defeated Richard Nixon in the 1960 Presidential election to become the 35th President of the United States.
Along with his wife, Jacqueline Bouvier Kennedy, and their two young children, Caroline and John Jr., the Kennedy family brought youth, fashion, a passion for the arts and a commitment to community service to the White House. Kennedy sought to challenge the country in what he called the New Frontier,
and during his inaugural speech he uttered the famous words ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country.
John Kennedy's presidency was marked by both political failures, such as the Bay of Pigs Invasion, as well as successes, including a resolution to the Cuban Missile Crisis and the signing of the Limited Nuclear Test Ban Treaty with the Soviet Union. Kennedy founded the Peace Corps and Navy SEALs during his presidency, and he expressed his commitment to the Civil Rights Movement and leaders such as Martin Luther King Jr.
Although John F. Kennedy appeared to lead a very charmed and privileged life, with his wealth, family connections and handsome good looks, he also experienced many personal struggles and family tragedies. He suffered poor health as a child, along with serious illnesses and injuries as an adult, including severe back problems and Addison's disease.
His oldest brother Joseph died in World War II and his sister Katherine died in a plane crash in 1948. John and Jackie Kennedy also lost two children - a daughter Arabella to stillbirth in 1956, and son Patrick, who was born prematurely and lived for only two days, before dying in August 1963. John Kennedy of course suffered the ultimate tragedy, when he was assassinated at the age of 46.
Although John F. Kennedy is still held in very high regard as one of the greatest U.S. Presidents ever, his reputation has also suffered in recent years, as more information regarding his numerous marital infidelities have come to light. His assassination has also given rise to various conspiracy theories, as a high percentage of
