    ITS FOUNDATIONS AND TEACHINGS

    NUMEROLOGY, the Science of Numbers, is believed to be one of the oldest branches of occult lore, though the earliest mention of it which has come down to us was made by a classic writer living less than three thousand years ago—a long, long time, certainly, but short in comparison with the six thousand years which have gone since the men of Ur of the Chaldees brought the knowledge of Astrology into Egypt and inspired the building of the Pyramids. Yet there is every reason to believe, though no direct proof, that Numerology was known in those far-off times, and played its part in the laying of the first stones of those mighty monuments of mystery.

    The science is founded on the theory—perhaps the fact would be a better word—that numbers in common with jewels and other inanimate objects, emit vibrations which influence other beings who come within their radiance, the influence being favourable or unfavourable according to the aspects and other considerations.

    As a very crude object-lesson to illustrate the meaning of this, use may be made of music or of the colours in an artist’s box. Various instruments give forth their separate sounds under the hands of their players, and when two or more such instruments are played together their music may blend into a perfect and inspiring harmony or crash into discord that brings distraction. So with colours. Some will match, others, when brought together, set the teeth on edge, as the saying goes. It is the same with the vibrations with which we are dealing now. These vibrations, whether of numbers or jewels, may blend with the aura of the person affected (I am using crude and unscientific language for the purpose of general clarity), to create an atmosphere of high resolve and splendid courage, of hope and general uplift, or,
