About this ebook

This is the story of a man who dared to listen to the land and the woman who went in the face of society to change the world.

Lady Valaria and Master Dallam may reside in vastly different social strati, but deep down inside they are very much alike. Both have family issues that push them to succeed and both wear blinders when it comes to certain aspects of their world. Lady Valaria, the ambassador’s daughter, is a scientist who believes many of Earth's problems exist because people are not eating the nutrients they need. She is fascinated to find that someone on her planet, Master Dallam, has coaxed the barren landscape into offering up her bounty.

There is an instant attraction when the two meet, however, both are determined to ignore it and get on with the business at hand. Things start looking up for this headstrong couple, but fate and a certain hateful half-brother set a wrench in the works. And when that doesn't work he resorts to greater measures to rid himself of any obstacles to achieving his political dreams. Will good conquer evil, and will Valaria and Dallam live happily-ever-after?

Fairytales are fabulous and grown-up fairytales even more so but I won’t lie, when I was assigned The Turnip as my point of reference I was anything but excited.

I wondered just what I was going to write. I’d never actually written a Sci-Fi story before but with every thought I had about this story the future kept calling me and Valaria and Dallam wanted their story told. Now I wouldn’t trade the Turnip in for any other of the classics. I’d love to return to Axis and bring to life so many more adventures.

I hope you enjoy this story as much as I loved writing it and I’d love to hear from you, just send me a note at venuscahill@yahoo.ca .

    Prologue

It’s a clear night in the Black Forest. Light dances across the darkening sky, in ribbons of every color. Luminous and brilliant, it calls forth a feeling of magic and mystery. A full moon hangs in the distance like a paper lantern. The mist isn’t present tonight, but it will creep in, come morning, and with it, terrors lurking behind its hazy mask. No wise person is out when the fog encroaches, but that is hours away, and tonight is a good night for soothsayers.

No taller than four feet, or the height of a six-year-old child, an older man parts the crowd as he walks toward a rickety stage scabbed together with salvage from an old building. A makeshift performance area, which adds to the foreboding ambience. In the distance, laughter and music fill the night from a transient gypsy camp, the odd little man’s home. Wayfarer—traveler. His appearance speaks of decades of restlessness, moving from village to village, port to port, planet to planet, throughout the galaxy.

He is a collector of stories, and tonight he has a tale to tell. It’s written in his eyes, and the wrinkles on his face, crisscrossing his skin in an aged roadmap, are as much a record as a history book. His gait rolls, as though he’s not traveled on land in decades, and his long gray beard twists and turns in every direction, like a bramble bush, dried and weathered from the elements. His woolen green britches and red shirt add to a gnomish appearance, a stage prop, for clothes of such antiquity would not be sported by any other.

In one hand he bears a steel pipe. Using it as a staff, he climbs to take his perch. His knees bend at the back, much like a bird’s, making one wonder if his deformity is real or costume. Hop, skip, he lands on the platform and turns toward the gathering crowd, with a bow and a spin, sweeping his hand from right to left in the grandest of gestures.

Circle in, ye lads and lasses. My name is Nicodemus. I be a traveling bard. For a coin, I’ll share a tale. He tosses his hat on the ground before him, and members of the crowd drop their offerings in it.

Nicodemus folds as he sits and leans forward. His beard rustles, and a large electric-blue tarantula crawls from the nest of tangled hair and onto his shoulder, where it vibrates and purrs like a contented cat. He reaches up and strokes his hand over its back. It chirps, circles, and then snuggles in for the story.

"Once upon a time, greed and power took its toll on Earth and, after years of neglect and mistreatment, Mother Nature gave up and decided to no longer nourish her inhabitants. A great time of turmoil existed, and many people died from disease and starvation until a scientist made a discovery enabling the replication of food. But only the wealthy could afford this new form of nutrition, and soon the middle classes ceased to exist—there remained the elite and those who served them. However, in time, the Earth began to heal herself and promised to provide once again for her inhabitants if they would take care of her in return.

This is the story of a man who dared to listen to the land and the woman who went in the face of society and dared to change the world.

Nicodemus’s voice rises above the excited sounds of his audience until silence ensues and he continues with his story. "While a time of change, a great resistance to the proposed changes existed. The politico class had been in charge for so long they couldn’t remember it not being so and thus gave birth a reluctance to relinquish their power. However, one woman could see if they continued in this vein, soon they would be in dire straits again. She vowed to give the entire planet the means to prosper.

While she spent most of her days and nights in her research lab, intent on finding the solution to the world’s nutritional issues, her father conducted business as usual and used his influence to aid her project. For although beyond unusual for a woman of her social standing to become a member of the Intellectuam, he admired his daughter and would do anything to help her succeed and thus keep her happy. Therefore, when his business dealings brought him to a flourishing farm and the young man offered him produce, Ambassador Baal regifted the food to his child, knowing she would indeed be pleased, and no doubt curious about it. If he had known the changes would take place because of this unassuming basket of food, he might have rethought the entire idea.

    Chapter One

Dallam didn’t know what his half-brother wanted from him now, but it couldn’t be good. On the upside, at least he hadn’t come in person. He would never lower himself to enter this sector. Despite his avid curiosity, Dallam waited for his brother’s secretary to come to the farm. The man did show some signs of humanity at times, but years in the service of Kragger would test the patience and virtue of even the kindest of souls, so Dallam didn’t take offense at anything the other man did.

Master Dallam, I’ve come with good tidings. Colonel Kragger understands your hardships and has offered to purchase your parcel of land. He will give you remuneration enough to move back to the metropolis and perhaps even regain your commission.

Dallam credited his years of military service for his ability to maintain an impassive expression. "Thank you to my brother for his kind offer, but I believe I have found contentment with my life here in Segundo Sector and do not wish to return to the metropolis. It has been so long since I have heard from my brother. Please thank
