Zu behaupten, Violette Nozière wäre von ihren Eltern verzogen worden, ist wahrscheinlich noch untertrieben. Ihr Vater Baptiste war Lokomotivführer bei der Eisenbahngesellschaft Paris-Lyon-Méditerranée; er hatte sich dort vom Mechaniker und Heizer zu einem verantwortungsvolleren Posten emporgearbeitet und war unter anderem mit der Aufgabe betraut, den Zug mit dem Präsidenten der Republik zu führen. Die Mutter, Germaine, stammte aus Neuvy-sur-Loire. Baptiste war ihr zweiter Mann, nachdem eine frühe Ehe mit einem Jugendfreund wegen dessen Trunksucht schnell beendet worden war.
Die Familie wohnte in einer kleinen, aber sehr sorgfältig und bürgerlich eingerichteten Wohnung im Hinterhof von Nr. 9, Rue Madagascar im 12. Pariser Arrondissement, gleich hinter der Arbeitsstätte von Baptiste, dem Gare du Lyon.
Violette, am 22. Januar 1915 geboren, war das einzige Kind des Ehepaars. Das hübsche und intelligente Mädchen, das immer wieder unter Kinderkrankheiten litt, wurde deshalb von den Eltern verzärtelt und bekam so gut wie jeden Wunsch erfüllt. Sie sollte es einmal besser haben und die Chance erhalten, dem kleinbürgerlichen Milieu zu entkommen. Die Eltern beschlossen, dass ihre Tochter das Gymnasium besuchen würde und schrieben sie 1927 ins Lycée Sophie Germain im 4. Arrondissement ein. Aber Violette erkrankte neuerlich und wurde zwecks Erholung zur Großmutter in Neuvy geschickt.
Sie war knapp 13 Jahre alt, sah aber wie 16 aus. Groß und schlank, mit schmalen Hüften, kleinen Brüsten und einem süßen, eher pikanten als schönen Gesicht entsprach sie genau dem Schönheitsideal ihrer Zeit. Es war kein Wunder, dass sie der männlichen Dorfjugend von Neuvy und den Sommerfrischlern aus Paris auffiel. Violette ließ sich bewundern, spielte gern bei den Flirts mit und war auf allen Sommerfesten zu finden, wo sie sich bis in die frühen Morgenstunden amüsierte. Dass sie dabei ihre Großmutter und die Eltern, wenn letztere zu Besuch kamen, täuschen musste, gehörte mit zum Spiel. Sie hatte offiziell nur bis Mitternacht Ausgang und musste, wenn sie länger
