    Howard Dougan moves with his family to a haunted house on an island in the middle of a lake to get away from the rat race. Soon his paradise is turned upside down by strange, apparently paranormal activity. His son starts sleepwalking, his dog barks at evil spirits and his maid is terrified for her life. There is something very wrong about the place and the maid believes all the ghost stories while his wife keeps her counsel. But Howard won't accept a supernatural explanation until he discovers a haunted secret his wife has hidden, that he should have known about all along.

    A short story in English set in the British Lake District. This is a haunted house mystery story of around 9,000 words. It is a ghost story -  strong on brooding suspense and uncanny atmosphere but no gore.
