      What’s it about?

      Not so long ago, all the data in the world was collected face-to-face by human beings, recorded by hand, and stored in tomes in vaults. Due to the constraints of time and human resources, the amount of data that could be collected was finite. These days, however, data is collected by machine, stored on machines, and even analyzed by machines: suddenly it is possible that the amount of data we can collect is infinite, with little worry about space to store it or time taken to collect it.

      Of course, there are many uses for data. From the seemingly trivial—ever wondered what the world’s favorite color is? You can find that out from colorcom.com (it’s blue, by the way)—to the very serious matter of recording and predicting crime. Data surrounds us now, and we take it for granted every time we look up something on the internet. Big Data has become a part of our lives, and we have welcomed it into our world with open arms. But do we really know what it is? Are we aware of how it is being used both for and against us? Should we be embracing it, or is there a more cautionary tale to be told?
