    Chapter 1

Elizabeth Darcy descended the winding staircase in the London town house. Her muslin day dress rustled against her petticoats, the rose design complemented by a pink ribbon at the waist. Her temples ached with consternation.

Two necklaces were draped across her hand. A gold cross hung from each. One was all simplicity. The other was embellished with a diamond in the centre and elegant flourishes at the tips.

She strode into Darcy’s study. He was leaning back in his chair, cravat loose, eyes scanning the newspaper. It still sometimes surprised her that this handsome man was her husband. His high cheekbones, his strong chin, his piercing dark eyes sent a flush through her.

Behind him, a fire crackled. Light glinted against the polished green marble of the fireplace. Sunbeams pouring through the south-facing windows brightened the dark wood of the floors and bookcases.

What do you think, my love? She approached the desk and showed him the necklaces. I know Jane does not care about such things, but I am in a quandary. I would not wish to put on airs. But I do think the fancier necklace might be more fitting of my new station.

He rose and swept her into his arms. This beautiful neck requires no adornment. He trailed kisses along her flesh, and a shiver ran over her.

She turned to kiss his mouth before saying, That is a lovely sentiment. However, it does not help in my current predicament. Which would your mother have worn?

He scowled. You do not have the same taste as my mother did.

It is not only a matter of taste, Lizzy insisted. She was the daughter of an earl. She would have known the proper choice in such a situation.

He took the two necklaces from her hands and set them on the desk. Then, he kissed her palms. A flush warmed her body.

You have never before shown much interest in jewellery, he said. I suspect you are driving yourself mad over a trifle because you are eager to see your sister.

Lizzy’s stomach fluttered. I want everything to be perfect when Jane gets here.

Because Jane is such a demanding critic.

She pursed her lips and turned her head from him. He was right, of course. She was being silly.

The sisters had not seen one another since their wedding day. It had been a double ceremony that all of Meryton and half the surrounding county had turned out for. The day had been like something out of a storybook. The happiest day of her life.

Now, however, she missed Jane dreadfully. She had so much to tell her—things one can only confide in a most beloved sister.

With a gentle fingertip, Darcy turned Lizzy’s face back towards his. Jane will be deliriously happy to see you, and you her. You could both be naked and the other would not notice.

I would not go that far.

He gave her a playful grin. Perhaps I am arguing in favour of my wife being naked.

She looked at him slyly. "You will behave yourself once they get here, will you not?"

Certainly. But I see no reason to do so before. He kissed her deeply, and she did not resist.

Darcy and Lizzy had come to their London town house immediately after their honeymoon tour of the Cotswolds. They would spend the winter season there. Lizzy’s only regret
