    Chapter 1

    Megan

    Areason . A season. A lifetime.

The first time Megan received a forwarded email explaining the temporal nature of relationships, she was fourteen.

She had received it from her best friend, Kira—a girl she met in second grade and who had added the note: I hope you’re my lifetime! :)

The second time Megan received the forward, she was twenty, and it had come from a cousin she had once been close with but had grown apart from since graduating high school.

Megan wasn’t sure what to make of it then—was her cousin saying she understood why they were no longer close, considering the actual physical distance put between them by college, and that their friendship had only been for a season? Or was she hoping they had parted temporarily to learn other life lessons, but would come together again, turning out to be lifetime friends instead?

    Megan didn’t bother to clarify.

The third time Megan received the forward, it was from her best friend, Kira, again, a few years later.

This time, there was no ambiguity—they were now in their early twenties and still extremely close, and both were excited to continue their lifelong journey as confidants.

But the journey ended for one of them.

As Megan watched her carry-on get scanned by the airport technology, she worried about the small container of ash within.

Kira had gotten her wish of having Megan as a lifetime friend, but instead of them taking their friendship into old age as she’d probably imagined, her life was cut short by a drunk driver.

Megan hoped this trip to the islands would give her some sort of closure—part of the reason she was taking it was to spread some of Kira’s ashes in the country that had been at the top of her bucket list.

It seemed so unfair to Megan that, here she was, getting the chance to travel to this place Kira never made it to, but she wasn’t even half as excited about the idea—only glad to take a much-needed vacation.

She was still in a state of disbelief, in fact; how could Kira have ended up being just a season for her after all?

No matter how illogical it was, part of her still didn’t think it was real—her best friend wasn’t dead, and she would magically re-materialize when Megan got back to the states, ready to chastise her for taking this trip without her.

Megan almost missed her boarding call, deeply engrossed in her thoughts as she went over the few plans she’d made for her week-long island getaway.

She’d forgotten she was on a first class ticket for the first time, so she was expecting to be called later—not among the first set of passengers to be invited to board.

She got up quickly, grabbing her bag, then hurried onto the airplane.

A face caught her eye once she entered the first class section—a handsome, chiseled, tan face with bright blue eyes focused intently on her.

She almost stopped in her tracks she was so stunned by the man’s good looks—she thought guys like him only existed in the movies, aided by lighting and other visual effects, tucked into corners of Hollywood.

She suddenly found herself feeling heated and self-conscious, aware of every movement she made—especially with his hypnotizing eyes not leaving her.

He didn’t vanish like a mirage as she got closer, and as she checked her seating assignment, she realized she’d be sitting right next to him.

Every atom of her being vibrated more.

What luck, the handsome stranger said, one corner of his mouth tilting up as she stopped and flashed him a brief smile, indicating the empty window seat next to him.

He got up to accommodate her, and she decided not to address his comment—especially since she had been thinking the same thing.

Instead, she sat and tucked her bag beneath the seat in front of her as he sat back down.

She felt his eyes on her again.

You sure look the part, he said in a growling masculine tone once she had settled—a growl that made her core start to vibrate with interest.

She turned to look at him, trying to keep her expression neutral.

    Excuse me? she queried lightly.

He was even more rattling up close and she tried to ignore his beauty, the heady cologne emanating from him, his intent blue gaze, the lips she had started to scrutinize and wonder what it would be like to touch with hers.

She did her best to ignore her pounding heart, her racing blood, the growing heat and tingling between her legs.

I happen to be looking for a wife, he said, his voice deep and casual, and that’s probably you.

Megan suddenly stopped buzzing all over and erupted into laughter.

She laughed for so long that she wondered if she had transitioned to hysterics.

Had her grief finally gotten to her?

Why did this beautiful man’s statement seem so absurd?

Is this some kind of joke? she asked once she recovered. She looked around as if searching for a hidden camera crew.

What on earth do you think I am? she asked more seriously, trying to sound calm and firm, but not too caustic; after all, she was stuck with him for the duration of the plane ride.

"Who am I, you should ask," he said, his manner and tone unchanged, his eyes still unrelentingly on her.

    Okay then, who are you?

He didn’t answer. He just continued staring at her boldly like he was studying her, learning
