      A month after Chad and I broke up, my friend Barry called to check on me. Just making sure you’re still alive, he said with a laugh that was anything but funny. Chad’s moved on, why haven’t you?

      You called to ask me that? I countered. I stood at the French doors that opened onto my apartment’s tiny balcony and fiddled with the vertical blinds as I listened to Barry breathe in my ear. I shouldn’t have answered the phone. Chad and I were together for almost a full year, my longest relationship to date—I couldn’t understand why everyone thought I should get over him that easily.
