      Amalia moved through the near darkness, although she could see well enough. She wove through the scrub brush behind the encampment, ignoring the dogs trailing her. They always did, perhaps they’d cover her tracks. The sun had set and the heat of the day dwindled.

      She pulled the deep blue shawl tighter around her shoulders, covering her head. The goaty scent of the soft wool, dyed with the reddish liquid of the scrub thistle, brought little comfort.
