About this ebook

Having been with the Undead Unit for several months, Mikayla Deigh had finally found her place as its commander. Still, the reason she accepted position in the first place, the goal she set for herself, has been forever out of reach. Until now. A chance decision and a lucky break sets her on the path toward finding her son's killers. She will go through August Reuter, John Arrick, Rollins, and her own daughter to find the truth. She will know who murdered Michael Cortes.

In the meantime, a call comes in from an apartment building in the gang country. A basement full of zombies needs to be investigated and, with the Units newfound autonomy, the troops go in. But what she sees, what she has seen, will change the way Mary Steubens thinks and begin to alter her decisions from now on.

A child of the movies, I was always consumed by fantastic stories told by others and translated into adventures to be retold by me through the action figure medium. As I grew older, I put the action figures away and moved into the realm of role playing. Though I never outgrew role playing, I certainly don't have the time for it anymore. Since I was eleven years old, I've been pouring almost every ounce of creative energy I have into writing.I graduated college in 1993 with a degree in computer science. I tried my hand at programming for a couple of years and found it pretty unsatisfying. I later became a partner at a comic book store, where I spent several years. Though it wasn't a financial success, the experience I gained from running the store and the people that I met (many of whom I'm still in touch with today) was priceless. After leaving the store, I settled into a career of teaching. I still teach at a public high school in New York. Ironically, I've picked up computer programming again, which is what I mostly teach.I've been writing the whole time.I released my first book electronically in 2010. Forty Leap was a turning point for me in both style and story building. The Book of Revelations, which was written earlier but released later, was sort of a midway point between the writer I was and the writer I've become. I experimented with a very odd style and a story that employed diverse characters and controversial situations. In September 2010, I released the first installment of Zombies! Zombies! has been a tremendous success for me that came very close to being made into a television series. Since Zombies!, I have written a five part miniseries called Castes and have been working on developing tabletops games, the first of which, ApocalypZe, was published in early 2014.Now, 6 years later, a 3rd Zombies! series is due to be released in September of 2016.

    Chapter I

Steubens came to Deigh early on Saturday morning. The captain liked working Saturdays. At home, she would have had to tolerate the presence of Guillermo. Now that Shannon had moved out, there was no buffer between Deigh and her husband. With Shannon in the house, Guillermo had at least had a choice of targets. Now, Deigh was always in the line of fire.

Steubens, who was supposed to have had the day off, knocked tentatively on the captain’s door. When Deigh looked up, she was surprised. In the month that she had known Steubens, there had never been anything tentative about the woman. She approached her work with aggression, which was not a healthy substitute for confidence. Right or wrong, she met challenges with force. Deigh believed that Steubens was bitter because she hadn't made it higher up the ladder yet. She could blame it on her appearance or her attitude or the fact that she was a woman, but the truth, as Deigh saw it, was that Steubens, while an adequate officer, was not exceptional.

    Until that Saturday.

Steubens had accompanied Deigh to August Reuter’s event the night before. Deigh had asked her there because of all of the same reasons she found Steubens to be ordinary. As someone who was outraged and afraid of the changes that each new day brought to the world, Steubens seemed like the ideal recruit for the cause.

    Again, until that Saturday.

    Captain, am I disturbing you?

Deigh had never seen Steubens in street clothes. Sure, she'd been dressed for the event the night before, but that was different. She hadn't chosen that gown and had most likely shed herself of it the way another person will swat at a swarm of bees. Now she wore a simple pair of baggy jeans and a sweatshirt that simply had the letter X stenciled on the front.

Deigh leaned back in her chair. In fact, she was glad for the disturbance. She had been looking at manpower reports all morning. Reuter had kept her up late the night before outlining what he wanted her, as captain of the Undead Unit, to do with her force. She was about to be granted authority over the units in all five boroughs and almost limitless autonomy. Her officers would have the authority to knock down doors and put bullets into the heads of every zombie they caught wind of. That was fine with her. She was not, however, getting anymore detectives.

Why do you need more detectives? August had asked. "You don't need to investigate anything. If there's a sniff of a zombie, just send in the troops."

Sure. It was just that easy. Kill all the zombies.

But what about the son of a bitch who'd set off the bomb that had killed Michael? How was she to catch the people who'd sent him?

What can I do for you, Steubens?

Steubens hesitated, which was so very much unlike her. It’s about Cortez, ma’am. Um...Michael.

Deigh felt her hands grip the arms of the chair a bit more tightly than they had been. In the weeks she'd spent as captain of the Undead Unit, only one person had had the temerity to mention her son to her. She had tried to be as frank with Rollins as he had been with her. For everyone else, though, the subject was taboo. As popular and respected as Michael had been, it was as if he'd never even existed.

Did you ever watch the video feed from his camera?

Of course, Deigh answered. She'd watched it exactly one time. It had cut out after only a couple of minutes and there didn't seem to be very many clues to be gained from watching the squad shoot down zombies.

Yeah, said Steubens absently. Of course you did. I watched it a lot of times, though.

Steubens, what are you getting at?

Let’s go watch it together. There’s something I want to show you.

Sighing, Deigh stood up and put her computer to sleep. Locking the office door on the way out, she glanced down the hall to where Rolins’ own door stood closed. He had the day off. She wasn't used to that. In the time she'd been on the Unit, she was sure that there had been only one or two occasions during which she'd been at the precinct and he hadn't.

The evidence room was up on the fifth floor. They shared it with the other squads in the building but had their own private section. After all, a lot of what they brought in was dangerous. There was another section for digital evidence. Everything was backed up, of course, but this was where you went if you wanted to listen to audio or watch video. Deigh signed herself in and Steubens followed. They went to a terminal and Deigh sat down. It took her only a moment to find the video.

The lieutenant should have sent me in, Steubens said.

No he shouldn't have, Deigh countered harshly. She didn't say that Michael was the better cop. She didn't have to. Steubens got the idea.

I watched this video to see if he did anything wrong, Steubens said quickly. There wasn’t enough footage, though. It cut out way too soon.

All at once, the video was on and Michael’s voice filled the speakers. Deigh wanted to just shut her eyes and listen. But she needed to watch. Whatever Steubens wanted to show her, it would happen on screen.

In a moment, Michael and his squad were surrounded by the dead. The actual dead. They weren't zombies, they were victims. The video was grainy, as if something was interfering with the feed. These videos were never great because of all of the motion, but this was uniquely bad. It flickered in and out as Michael went into the stairs. There was maybe ten seconds of video left
