Chapter One
With a grunt, Orange Ross hefted the window up. The cold winter wind wailed, whipping at his face. His stomach sunk and his insides twisted. Behind him, a rattling sound followed by the door slamming shut made him jump.
Only the door,
he murmured to himself.
He glanced at the room. Plastic sheets still covered some of the furniture.
Orange knew no one would enter the apartment any time soon. Its previous owner had died and the agent had a hard time selling the place. He had memorized all the facts, before attempting to break in. This wasn’t his final destination, the next door unit was.
Why am I doing this again?
he whispered to himself.
Orange swore he wouldn’t look down, but he did. He swallowed. Twenty stories up didn’t sound all that scary until he looked down at the ice-covered pavement. A tabby shifter with nine lives wouldn’t survive a fall like that.
Orange rubbed his clammy hands together.
Inner peace,
he whispered to himself.
Repeating the two words over and over didn’t help. Meditation classes his ass. Orange stripped out of his clothes. The wind chilled him but he would be trading his human skin for fur anyway.
One phone call from the police station. That was all his fucking brother needed to make. Orange reached for his inner cat. He shrank. Bones broke and organs re-arranged himself. Now or never.
Dragging his feet on this little job wouldn’t do him any favors. Orange had a brother to bail out of jail and lesson plans to finish. Tomorrow was Meet the Parents day too. Fuck.
Once on all four paws, he jumped out the window.
Trusting his animal to do the rest, he balanced himself on the ledge. His fur protected him from the winter cold, but if the wind persisted or his paws stepped on a patch of melted snow, he could slip and fall to his untimely death.
Orange very much liked to live. He had plans. To open his own kindergarten someday, find a gorgeous mate. That sort of thing.
Keeping his tail upright for balance, he worked his way to the window of the next door unit. The window to the bathroom remained opened, just as he anticipated. Orange jumped into the tiny slit. One of his hind paws got caught on something, the window latch.
A mewl escaped him as he crashed into the soap holder, scattering containers. Sticky stuff splashed over his body, floral liquid soap by the scent of it.
Wrinkling his nose, Orange climbed out of the tub. He smelled like lavender. Great. He rubbed his fur dry the floor mat and exited the bathroom. This wasn’t the most graceful of jobs. Normally, once something went wrong, Orange would back off, come again another day.
A thief couldn’t afford to be picky, especially when he needed instant cash. His wereferret best friend, Rusty usually had his back, but Rusty was too busy shacking up with his terrifying werewolf mate. That, and paying off their debts to one busy crime lord.
What was the world coming to when his best friend no longer had his back? Doing gigs alone sucked big time. Orange had to depend on his lonesome now. He crept out of the bathroom. The bedroom was dark, its occupants probably out partying.
He quickly found his golden ticket. The diamond necklace sat in its usual spot—displayed in a glass case. Orange turned back to human and checked the security touch screen near the door, quickly disabling it by entering the password. That done, he sighed with relief and approached the case with caution.
Admittedly, he hadn’t done his complete research on this apartment and its security system. There was no time. Ollie sounded desperate on the phone, needing Orange to bail him out.
Snatch and go,
he whispered.
The case looked harmless enough, the little lock seemed easy to pick open. He grabbed the tools he taped onto his arm and began fiddling with the lock. Five seconds and he opened the glass door. Swiping the necklace, he put it around his neck. When he shifted, it wouldn’t fall off.
Easy as pie.
He crept back to the bathroom just as the bedroom door swung open.
What the hell? Sweat tickled down his spine.
Hands up and turn, thief,
a voice growled out.
The tabby in him cowered, the impulse to run triggered. Whoever was at the door wasn’t human. His animal told him it was some kind of predatory shifter. Bear. Shit. Orange hated those.
Not yet, he cautioned his cat. Big shifters underestimated the little guys all the time. Orange froze when he felt the kiss of a barrel poking at his back. Fear rammed into him.
The metal pulled an inch away, as if the shooter only wanted to warn him.
Turn around, slowly,
the deep voice ordered. What the fuck, why are you naked? Are you some kind of pervert?
Orange was beyond insulted. Seriously?
