Dear Diary.app: I just learned the meaning of reversal of fortune.
Chapter One
All I had to do was create a little smear campaign. Little. Not so major that it would destroy, not so small that it would go unnoticed, and I only had to do it to Ember Overton, the girl with the perfect life. How could I turn that down?
When the car rolled into the long driveway past so much green, I thought the driver must have messed up and was driving on a golf course somewhere, I felt butterflies. I was still under the impression that Ember herself had invited me there, even though I had never said more than hi to her in all the years I'd gone to school with her. Ember was popular, but she wasn't anything special. She was not gorgeous, she was in the iffy range body-wise. Some days, she looked great, some days she was a mess. And her personality was as bland as a warm glass of milk.
In spite of all that, I was obsessed with her. I was obsessed with the thought that we were so similar, I could easily have had her life and she could have had mine. I wasn't gorgeous, probably less so than Ember. I, too, was borderline physically. Did I need to lose weight? Would I have been better off gaining weight? Did I just need a different style, haircut, a different bra? My personality wasn't bland, I don't think, but I could never manage to stand out in a crowd.
The question was, why was she popular and I wasn't?
Ember's family had money. Her father was the CEO of some major company somewhere. My family had ... Well, we had one another. We did okay, I guess, but I had none of the things Ember had. I knew that was part of the reason why our lives were different. It wasn't the whole reason It couldn't be. What was it about her that attracted those kids to her? That's what I spent my time wondering. While I wondered about it, I obsessed about her, Ember Overton, the girl with the perfect life.
Why did I even walk inside of the house? I knew something was wrong, didn't I?
The same guy who had driven the fancy car led me into a back door and through the house. We went through the kitchen, the laundry room, down a small hallway that didn't seem to fit the house. Driving up to it from outside, the place looked too big to have any place so tight and small inside it. I wondered if it was really a secret passage, even though it was in the open.
Finally the hall intersected with another wider, brighter, fancier hallway lined with art and flowers and, I noticed, cameras.
