What would you do if you were thrust into a situation you’d never been faced with before? These writing prompts put you there and leave you to contemplate the outcome. As a bonus, at the end you’ll find five extra prompts that deal with R-rated scenarios. Skip that section if you don’t want to ponder sexy dilemmas.
1. A classmate of yours from high school wrote a novel that has exploded and is dominating all the best-seller lists. You pick up a copy and as you read the chapters, you are horrified to discover that the book is the story of your life. It details the thievery you did as a teenager, an ordeal your mother went through, the hacking you did at school to change your grades, your first unique sexual experience, and your brother’s dabble with ISIS. When the book’s main character has a one-night foray into prostitution and endures a situation that isn’t common, that cements it for you: every single detail of the book is your life. What would you do?
2. You work at a prestigious auction house. After a particularly successful day auctioning off multi-million dollar paintings, you are heading down to the parkade to head home when you see a couple of thugs bent over something in the back of a van. Walking by, you see a painting is being removed from a frame and a replica is on the floor beside it. The thugs spot you and strong-arm you up against the closest wall. One of the burly guys tells you that if you ever tell anyone what you just saw, you and your family will be killed. They let you go and you proceed to get in your car and head home. What would you do?
3. You have been dating someone for over a year and the two of you are pondering getting married. You go on a road trip to test your relationship. Three days in, the trip is going great! You stop for gas and your significant other goes into the convenience store to stock up on snacks. You never see your love again as he/she simply vanishes from the store. The police do their best but they are unable to find out what happened to the person you love. You do the talk show rounds, sharing your story and begging for any information about what happened. A year later, a man approaches you and says that he knows exactly what happened to your love as he is responsible for the disappearance.
