First Look: Hair on Fire
How do you create powerful lede paragraphs, the essence of good newswriting?
Listen. Observe. Exercise your imagination.
Here’s an example, the first of more than 60 lede examples in this book:
My assignment: a freeway car crash with the news deadline looming.
The lede (26 words):
It’s amazing what you can do with flames in your face and your hair on fire,
said John Aguilar, moments after crawling from his burning car.
The accident occurred on a Friday afternoon, 45 minutes before deadline.
Listening to my police scanner, I heard a familiar emergency alert tone, followed by Major injury accident on Highway 680. CHP (California Highway Patrol) and ambulance dispatched. Car on fire with victim possibly trapped.
I jumped in my car and raced to the accident scene.
While CHP officers set up road hazard signs, I walked over to a man standing by the freeway. He appeared dazed as he watched a Jaguar convertible, upside down on the side of the road, ablaze. The top was crushed.
Moving my gaze from the burning wreck to the man’s smoking hair, I simply asked, How did you get out of there?
His answer was my lede: It's amazing … .
Prologue
"You can’t depend on your eyes when your imagination is out of focus." — Mark Twain
Tweet It! makes an attempt at jumping-starting your imagination and rekindling your fire for news and feature writing. Toward that end, I offer real-world examples of powerful ledes, like ‘Hair on Fire’ on the previous page. I also offer dozens of tips for improving your own story-telling.
I chose Tweet It! for a title because I thought it would be an attention-getter. Like a good lede.
Truth is, you can summarize just about any story — create a lede paragraph — in 140 characters (20-25 words). What is magic about a 25-word lede paragraph goal?
Brevity breeds clarity.
