I've been writing my entire life: poetry, fiction, and non-fiction. This love affair with the written word prompted me to take a huge risk and pursue writing as a career after I recovered from cancer. In addition to being a writer, I am a mother, newlywed, volunteer, animal lover, avid runner and swimmer, and parent to a highly neurotic dog.Thank you for visiting my author page! I hope you find something to draw you into the story.

    ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

For my partner, Joanna Poulos, for loving me through this, thank you! Vanessa Cornejo, immense gratitude for your many flight miles to be here for me. My beautiful children, you made me laugh throughout it all. My parents, who had to suffer right along with me. Shonda Alfaro, who stayed in the hospital with me for that first surgery, and had to tolerate my drugged out insomnia. For my doctors, Dr. Jim Cho who kept me steady, Dr. Janet Ihde who listened to me and performed a surgery that the insurance company didn’t want, Dr. Andrew Hayduke who made me look like a girl again, Dr. Reynaldo Gomez who told me he would shoot himself if I came back to him with cancer ever again, Dr. David Masiello who oversaw my chemo and has been overseeing my remission, and for his awesome nurse, Rachel, who made every infusion feel like an episode of Cheers. A very special thank you to Ashley Bretz Stiles and her brilliant father Dr. Phillip Bretz, who talked me off a ledge while I navigated all of the ins and outs of treatment, and for her wonderful mother, who gave me strict instructions to call her at any hour if I wanted help. I love and appreciate each and every one of you.

    1 INTRODUCTION

You have probably picked up this book more for the cancer-free in the title, than for the gourmet. After all, when most of us think of nutrition during cancer, we do not tend to perceive a gourmet diet or lifestyle. I know that, before my cancer diagnosis, I witnessed the absolutely not gourmet diet my mother had to maintain during her cancer treatment. Although, she did crave milkshakes, so that can’t be overlooked. I know many women shared with me their stories of how their food just would not taste right while they were on chemotherapy. In short, it is probably not a stretch to say we are all anti-cancer. I would just like to propose my own method of battling and triumphing over cancer while still enjoying life to the fullest extent possible.

Before we begin, I should introduce myself.

First off, I am not a medical professional. I have a degree in French, not a degree in nutrition. After the birth of my first child, I worked as a fitness trainer for special populations. My clients were recovering from injuries or learning to manage chronic illness, such as fibromyalgia, lupus, and multiple sclerosis. Most of my nutrition knowledge was geared towards performance and weight loss.
