A Bride Through Time - Cia Leah
Chapter One
Danni Dayton gazed at her reflection in the full-length mirror. It was her wedding day. A day she should be bubbling with happiness, but she wasn’t. Was she doing the right thing by marrying Donald Brewton? He was wealthy, an upstanding businessman, handsome, and could provide her with a secure future. She groaned. He treated her like a possession, not like a man who loved her with all his heart. Could she endure a marriage like that? She’d asked herself that very same question over the past two months. If she had to quiz herself on that issue, then what kind of marriage would they have? A cold and lonely one, that’s for sure. She sighed heavily when a knock sounded on the door. Come in.
She saw her father step through the door. Is it time?
You still have about fifteen minutes if you want to change your mind.
I’ve been debating that.
Well, in case you change your mind, let me know so I can tell Donald. I don’t know why you agreed to marry him anyway.
He’s your business partner. I thought you liked him.
Yes he is, and I do like Donald, but I want you to be happy. Donald possesses things. I’m afraid you will be another one of his collections.
When her father stepped up to her and took her hands in his, she stared up at the man who raised her, loved her, and provided her with a good childhood. I love you, daddy.
And I you, daughter. You look very beautiful. You remind me of your mother on the day we got married.
She smiled. That makes me proud.
I have something for you. I wasn’t sure whether to give it to you or not, but I think the occasion calls for it.
He reached into his jacket pocket and withdrew a small box. This was your great, great, grandmother’s ring. When I leave the room, put it on your finger and remember the stories I told you. They will help you deal with things you aren’t sure of. Your happiness is all I care about."
It’s a wedding ring?
No, but it is a beautiful ring that can make you happier. Don’t put it on until I leave the room.
Why?
He tapped the tip of her nose with his finger and smiled. Because I say so, and I want you to remember that fate always has a way of making things right. Remember that love is the most important thing in this world no matter where you are at.
Danni was puzzled, but hugged him back and kissed his cheek. I’ll be out in a few minutes.
Take care of yourself. You are a strong woman and you deserve a life filled with love and happiness. Money and material things don’t mean anything. Love makes you happy. I will always love you.
Danni watched him stride to the door, turn and look at her like he was seeing her for the last time, and then he disappeared through the door. What in the world was that all about?
She whispered, opening the small box. Inside was a gold-filigreed ring with a cameo in the raised center. It was beautiful and dainty. She lifted the ring out of the box and slipped it on her finger where her wedding band would go with the engagement ring she wore.
She blinked, as her engagement ring seemed to fade right before her eyes. What the heck is wrong with my eyes?
She reached out to grab hold of the mirror when the room spun and she slipped into unconsciousness.
JOSHUA CARSON WHISTLED for his dog. He was riding back from getting supplies in town and old Bear always wandered off sniffing out a new adventure. Bear, where the heck are you?
He heard the dog’s woof, stopped the buckboard, and listened to his dog’s low growl. He set the brake, jumped down, and strode to the bushes on the other side of the road. What’d you get? A rabbit?
He pushed through the bushes, mindful to watch for a snake, although if one were there, Bear would have killed it by now.
When he stepped past the bushes, he saw a mound of white silk. Bear was tugging on one end, ripping some of the material. Get away from there, Bear!
He walked over and looked down amongst the folds of silk and lace to find a woman. Well, I’ll be,
he said, kneeling down beside her. Ma’am? You all right?
When she didn’t move, he began to check her for injuries, but as far as he could tell, there wasn’t any. Ma’am wake up.
He stared at her, wondering how she got here and wondered what to do with her. His cabin was about a half mile up the
