Mindfulness for Beginners - Leon Mason
Introduction
Mindfulness is a simple form of meditation that has become more and more popular in recent years. Typically meditation is the art of focusing all of your attention on our breathing as it comes into the body and out. By focusing on your breathing you can observe thoughts as they arise and let go of them. You will understand and realize that thoughts come and go, and that you are not your thoughts. By understanding that thoughts and feelings are transient and you do have the choice on whether you act on them or not, are of vital importance to achieve mindfulness.
Mindfulness is about looking at things without criticism and being kind to yourself. When you find yourself in a situation that makes you stressed or unhappy, mindfulness teaches you not to take things personally but to treat them as if they are passing clouds that you acknowledge, think about for a moment and watch as they pass. Mindfulness sees you catching negative thought patterns before you spiral downwards, in essence mindfulness is the process of getting back control of your life.
There are numerous benefits and reasons that should have you wandering why you have never undertaken mindfulness, however despite these facts many people remain wary, and this is probably due to the misconceptions that surround the word mindfulness.

Chapter 1 – What is mindfulness?

The concept of mindfulness is often confused with other techniques and spiritual practices, therefore the most important and first step anyone should take is to fully understand what mindfulness is and discovering the power that it offers.
Mindfulness can be defined as:
The state of being mindful
The practice of being able to remain nonjudgmental and fully aware of one’s thoughts, experiences and emotions at any given time
The term mindfulness originates from the term sati
which is a term that is used in Buddhist practices and it also includes the following elements:
Vipassana
which means to see things as they are, and this is one of the most ancient meditation techniques
Satipatthana
which is the Pali word for the Buddhist perception of the foundations of mindfulness
Anapanasati
meaning the mindfulness of breathing which is a form of Buddhist meditation that is common with Tibetan, Tiantai, Theravada and Zen Buddhism
The practice of developing a state of mindfulness was recognized thousands of years ago by Eastern cultures. In spite of this the Western world has only identified its depth and importance for lifelong well being recently. Mindfulness only really became popular at the end of the last century because of the American professor Jon Kabat-Zim introduced a program that he developed called the Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction (MBSR). Prior to developing his program he was a student of several well known Buddhist teachers, and also a committed yoga and meditation professional and it was this that led him and gave him the inspiration to create the MBSR program.
Jon Kabat-Zim thought that his program could help those that
