    JHYOTI: PLANETSIDE

    by

    Marcelle Dubé

Jhyoti sen Chandar stepped down from the Beetle in time to see crewman Bergmann making his way through waist-high, blue-tinged bushes toward the shuttle. Above him, the milky white sky glared at her and she squinted.

Her own uniform pants flapped in the warm wind as she took her first deep breath of Planet J231EC’s atmosphere. Strange smells: something sweet and peppery like the freesias her home planet of Kallista imported from Earth, yet pungent like Kallistan stinkweeds. Bergmann’s uniform flapped around his muscular legs as he emerged from the bushes. Behind him, the blue bushes covered the plateau. Here and there, a lone tree rose above the bushes like an antenna.

Jhyoti was closest. She reached out to steady the smaller woman, but Parma righted herself and moved out of range before Jhyoti could help.

Do not touch me, bhoto, said Parma, her color high.

Parma ignored him with regal dignity.

Jhyoti smiled tightly. On Kallista, only bhoto know the words.

    Bergmann smiled with
