A British Expat’s Guide To Buying A House In The Algarve!
About Us
We are Dominic & Samantha Milner. We have been married for 11 years and have a teenage boy and a daughter on the way!
After getting sick of the quality of living in the UK we decided to move to Portugal in the summer of 2008 and have been there ever since!
We work from home as full time bloggers and internet marketing consultants and this is the next part of our journey.
We are in our 30’s and love the standard of living that Portugal offers families and that it isn’t just for the retired folk. Portugal is always portrayed as a place for people to retire to and as such there is a serious lack of advice available for the younger generation.
We love the Algarve from its sunshine to it’s great food and not to mention all the great things we can do no matter what the season is.
But not owning a property in Portugal has meant that is has never really felt like we have solid roots in the Algarve and we want somewhere that is special to us that feels like home.
This is our story of trying to buy a house in Portugal during 2014 when it is a buyers market and when the banks are suddenly making it possible to get a mortgage.
The Long Road To Buying A House In The Algarve
When we first moved over here getting a mortgage was never top of our priorities. I was still 26 at the time and Dominic was in his early 30’s. Our son Kyle who is now a teenager was just 6 at the time and we wanted to make sure we liked the area first, before we jumped in and bought a house.
That is why when we first moved to Portugal we came in a caravan. Actually it was a cheap caravan (just £300 and looked like it was a health and safety risk) that we had bought on eBay and we used to discover where in the Algarve we wanted to live.
But shortly after arrival in the Algarve the recession hit and our wage in pounds were suddenly worth 25% less and we knew that life in the caravan was going to be for a lot longer!
They we were stuck on a campsite full of retired motorhome owners with our scruffy caravan trying not to stand out too much. Though, that was rather hard when we were parked opposite our
