Listening skills are crucial once and for all relationships and therefore are also a vital skill in lots of professions, particularly the helping professions. Whether you're maintaining a happy marriage relationship, counseling someone with problems, or coaching people in your team for business success, good listening skills lead others to feel much more comfortable. They have more confidence in you and hold you in higher esteem.

A great listener shows five characteristics which can be remembered through the acronym SOLER
.
S - Square-on
Face the other person square on. If you should be turned away, you may not give the impression that you want to pay attention.
O - Open-posture
Folded legs, and particularly folded arms can be subconscious signals that you really don't would you like to hear what the other person needs to say.
L - Lean-towards
Lean slightly towards the other individual. This suggests an interest in what they are saying. Leaning far from an individual tends to indicate disinterest.
E - Eye-contact
Maintain normal eye connection with the other person. If you retain your eyes down, or keep looking away, you can easily provide the impression you are not a cushty or willing listener.
R - Relax
Avoid being too formal or stiff. A relaxed posture shows that you are comfortable when you look at the role of listener, and ready to hear everything the other person has got to say.
Start practicing your listening body language and SOLER now, and you'll start to see the improvement of one's interpersonal skill and relationships both on and off your work.
