    About the Authors

    Introduction

De Colores! In a meeting about Emmaus with Cherie Jones, Joanne Bultemeier spoke of her dream to write a book of devotional meditations based on the topics of the weekend talks. Joanne and Cherie began spinning ideas for a book or series of books. They made the proposal to The Upper Room’s book department.

As part of the ministry of The Upper Room, Upper Room Books provides resources for Emmaus communities. Some of the resources meet very specific needs, such as helping to introduce others to the Walk (What Is Emmaus?). Other resources offer models of guidance (The Board of Directors, Spiritual Directors). We believe our many small-group resources provide spiritual guidance and direction.

We also want to provide specific resources for the Fourth Day. We seek to be open to God’s movement in our lives and in our publishing ministry. We hope that our offerings will grow in quality and number just as we grow in the image of Jesus Christ.

This booklet provides forty-five meditations—three on each of the fifteen talks. Please read these devotions in your own way. They testify to God’s grace and remind us of our connections with the larger community of faith. When you read these meditations, remember that you are reading in the company of many other disciples. Be encouraged as you grow in the knowledge of the Holy Spirit.

May God’s peace be with you and with those around you.

    *Priorities

Choose this day whom you will serve (Joshua 24:15).

Imagine the scene. Joshua, now an old man, summons all the people of his country to one town and addresses the leaders of the people. The story he tells them begins long ago in a faraway place with a nomad named Abraham and his family. He reminds them briefly of the time of despair when they were slaves in another land. And then he tells them about the miraculous way God freed them from slavery and gave them this new land. Finally, Joshua offers them a choice: Having heard the long story of your history, choose which god you will serve. Will it be the gods of the land of your ancestors or the gods of the land you now inhabit or the God who brought you to this land? Joshua is clear that whatever the others might choose, he and his family will serve God.

Joshua’s challenge to the Israelites to choose which god they will serve is a challenge for us. If Joshua were here today, he might challenge us to choose between the gods of our time (money, violence, status, power) and the God revealed in Jesus Christ. The gods may be different but the question is still the same. Whom will you serve?

This challenge to choose which god to serve is not only a question of religious devotion but also is, in a broader sense, a question of priorities. I hope that we would answer that loving and serving God is our top priority. However, while our lives are rooted in God, we are not in relationship only with God. We have families and neighbors, dreams and goals, work and hobbies. We set priorities, and these priorities shape decisions about our daily activities and influence the larger texture of our lives.

If Joshua’s challenge to choose which god to serve is an important one for us, then so too is the challenge to identify and evaluate the rest of our priorities. What is important to you? Where do you spend your time and money? What do you think about? How have these priorities changed over the years? How is God glorified in your priorities?

Question for Reflection: Is God calling you to new priorities and if so, what are they?

    **Priorities

And what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God? (Micah 6:8).

When you made your Walk to Emmaus, you may or may not have realized that God is not mentioned in the Priorities talk. Throughout the Weekend, talks build upon one another, and the Priorities talk is to get us focused in the right direction. We are to think about the priorities in our lives at that time. As the Weekend unfolds, we learn that there is a progressive process in our faith journey. Piety, study, and Christian action are the foundations of a balanced life in Christ. Static dynamics of God’s grace are introduced.

We are asked three questions at the end of the Priorities talk: What do you think about? How do you spend your time? How do you spend
