I. Introduction
Welcome! Thank you for purchasing this genealogy e-book. The fact that you’re here means that you probably have some interest in finding out information about your ancestors. Or maybe you just want to see how all this genealogy stuff works. In any event, you’ve come to the right place!
But next to nothing? That means just about free. Really?
That’s probably what you’re thinking. Is it really free to discover your ancestors? Well, strictly speaking, no. It might cost gas money to drive to visit that one relative, or to the library. You might have to order a microfilm that costs seven dollars, or pay twenty cents for some copies occasionally. But, does it costs hundreds of dollars? Do you need a monthly subscription to Ancestry, or some other costly website? Do you need to hire an expert? No. None of those things are necessary. Don’t get me wrong, they can be helpful, for sure! And if you have some extra money and you simply don’t have time to do the research yourself, then by all means, hire someone! I myself do genealogy research for people as a genealogist; you can even hire me if you want! All of that is fine, if a person has no time to do research on their own and has the money and desire for an expert. But, the reason I wrote this book is because when I started researching, I didn’t have the money to do that, and simply could not afford it. And I found out that it was completely unnecessary to spend large quantities of money researching, when almost everything I found – and I found a lot! - could be obtained for free or at low cost.
Genealogy research has made some amazing strides over the last ten to fifteen years. In the past, researching your ancestors probably meant tons of phone calls, many trips to the library, or even out of state trips (or at least frustrating phone calls) to various record offices and possibly money to hire someone to help. With the advent of the internet, one can now contact far away places with a few strokes of the keyboard and with the ever-increasing number of records available online, it has become possible to research your ancestry from the comfort of your own home. Many cities and states are beginning to offer genealogy copies of records at lower cost, for ancestry purposes only; often libraries now have a genealogist on staff to help with researching. In some cases, it is still necessary to leave home to conduct research, but even so, it is absolutely much easier than even just ten or twenty years ago.
The goal of this book is to show you that you can research your ancestors fairly easily, and without much cost, either! That isn’t to say there
