    Possessing Asya - Ayse Hafiza

    Chapter One

    The

    Trip

Asya was going to the frickin’ köy - the village - somewhere in Turkey that her mom’s family came from. With her annual leave from the office and plane ticket booked, the trip was happening .

For Asya, this was to be a strategic visit, and like a military operation, she would get in and out as fast as possible. It would be a clean operation that would allow her to tick the boxes that needed ticking. And she guessed it wouldn’t hurt to be seen as taking an interest in the family. However, the antiquity of their past held no interest. Quite simply, in her mind, she was in the wrong place if she couldn't wear her Louboutin’s.

She zoomed into the image on Google Maps and it showed her a rural village tucked deep inside a valley edged by hills and a large forest, with one major road in and out. On the bright side, the place seemed like a Hunter wellies, Barbour jacket with a hint of tweed kind of place. Unlikely to need her straightening irons, false eyelashes or bikini, she wasn’t sure what

    to

    pack

    .

She’d enjoyed visiting Turkey on one of her last vacations, the fast-paced city of Istanbul and the party heaven of Bodrum, had been an amazing experience. However, the köy would be different. She’d seen old photos full of rough agricultural people with broad noses and rugged sun-kissed complexions. Apparently, the village was home to unknown distant relatives that didn't speak a word of English according to her mother. She expected criticism for her own poor Turkish, something she wasn't sure her ego could handle.

Asya was as modern as her London life, she had zero sentimentality for the peace that a rural village setting could offer. She didn't long for it, she didn't want to experience it and she most certainly didn't want to

    smell

    it

    .

‘Why am I putting myself through this?’ she repeatedly asked herself when she was alone. But then she always remembered why. Her mother wanted to go and Asya needed mom on her side for the secret engagement party that was planned for later in the year for herself and Ahmet. So, she’d adopted the guise of the dutiful daughter, in the hope that her mom would be more open to the engagement when the party plans became known.

Ahmet was Asya’s boyfriend, and initially he didn't want her to go, but warmed to the idea when she explained her secret strategy for their upcoming engagement. It was only then that Ahmet finally understood and accepted the importance of the holiday.

She smiled as she thought of him, her Ahmet. He was adorable at times and naturally he told her how much he would miss her. He knew just how to say all the right things. Asya knew she would miss him too. In the back of her mind, she knew that it wasn’t just separation and loneliness that made it an imperative she was not gone

    for

    long

    .

There was a niggling thought that kept scratching at the back of her mind, and as much as she pretended there was never trouble in paradise, Asya couldn’t deny it: Ahmet suffered from a wandering eye. He often flirted with Melis, who was her best friend. Asya mostly turned a blind eye to it because at twenty-six, her life needed to be on track. Getting married soon would give them a few years before hopefully having babies. Eventually, they would have the stability of a nice family home in North London and two children. That’s what Asya craved, it was her mental picture of what a successful life

    looked

    like

    .

When she looked over their photos together, she caught herself planning their future again. Lightly swiping her finger over their faces, she noticed how her bright eyes were a match for his, her perfect smile framed by her long brown hair complimented his dark hair and complexion. Holding onto each other, everyone could see they were a match. But she didn’t pay any mind to what others thought. She’d watched Mom struggle alone, and Asya was determined not to end up like that. She wanted a man that would meet her needs.

Ahmet, her Ahmet, worked in his family’s business. His
