Where to Start – Types of Races, What you Need to Know and Where to Begin
Congratulations! You have decided to join a triathlon. It means you are ready to complete three kinds of sport discipline in one event putting your body and mind to the test. The goals you will set for yourself will help determine what you will take away from this experience.
Choose your Distance
Triathlon comprises of swimming, biking, and running. Since the length of a race varies, the first step is to choose your preferred distance. These are the major distances:
+ Olympic or standard distance: 0.93-mile or 1.5-kilometer swim, 24.8-mile or 40-kilometer bike and 6.2-mile or 10-kilometer run;
+ Half Ironman: 1.2-mile or 1.93-kilometer swim, 56-mile or 90-kilometer bike, and 13-mile or 21-kilometer run;
+ Ironman: 2.4-mile or 3.9-kilometer swim, 112-mile or 180-kilometer bike, and 26.2-mile or 42.2-kilometer run (marathon distance);
+ Sprint or mini-triathlon: 0.5-mile or 0.8-kilometer swim, 15-mile or 24-kilometer bike, and 3-mile or 5-kilometer run
The sprint distances vary from a race event to another, while the rest are consistent with the length. The half and full distances are often referred to as Half Ironman and Ironman, respectively. The half can also be referred to as a 70.3, which represents the total mileage of the race.
Most first-timers join a sprint distance event. Some races offer a Super Sprint distance, which is slightly shorter than a sprint, but a less common event. Once you have completed a triathlon race, you may eventually decide to go longer – such as an Olympic, half Ironman, or the Ironman distance.
It is best to choose an event in a place that is accessible to you because there is a huge chance that you are already familiar with the course. The event you will choose should give you enough time to train for the distance. Lastly, select a race that is
