About this ebook

This book is a collection of short stories. Prose and some poetry make an interesting blend! The poems paint a story too.

As we walk down the path of life, often times a word, a moment, an occasion may trigger of the imagination and we tread into a realm of make-believe. Other times, we walk through experiences which border the unusual. Re-telling them in our own flavor adds a spin of spice to them.

The author’s own life perhaps, serves the background to many of the stories. The narratives then move to the ‘world of treasures, old and new!’

I am delighted to share them with you, over a cup of coffee!

    ––––––––

Chitrangada was bored. It was a Sunday afternoon and her thoughts meandered. What if she could go back a few hundred years? Perhaps she had lived in a land far away? Had she been a princess? Random thoughts.

    But were they just that?

The door to her room creaked as a young man stood before her. Yes, I have come to take you back, he said, Your thoughts brought me back to you. I am Vikramaditya. You were my sweetheart many moons ago. No matter, for I have come back to you now.

Startled, Chitrangada stood up. Where will you take me? she asked, feeling an undeniable tug in her heart towards this man who stood before her. He looked about thirty. He was wearing contemporary Indian clothes – an embroidered kurta (long-shirt) and pajamas (a type of pants). Who was he? Come Chitrangada’, he said, for I can be with you for only a few hours. Let us go to the forest where we have spent so many happy hours together".

His endearing smile and wistful look propelled Chitrangada towards him. As they walked out the door, a breeze blew and a thought struck her. ‘I wish I had the keys to the winds of my life. I would want to go back into time with him’.

The forest was a ten minutes walk away. As they walked uphill, he smiled at her. Be careful what you think Chitra, for they will materialize for you today!

The flowers on the hillside looked pretty. Even as she thought that, Vikram had a posy of them in his hands. But you didn’t pick them, Chitra exclaimed. Your thoughts will be given to you, my love.

He took her hand as they walked. They talked. It was like a feeling of bonding with a being who knew her innermost thoughts. His gaze warm and caring, pierced through her. ‘O God, don’t let this go away.’

A being of light stood before them. As Chitrangada looked towards him, he smiled and held out his hand. His outstretched hand held a bunch of keys. These are the keys to the winds of your life. Would you like to have them? he asked. Chitrangada looked at the keys. She was being given every wish. This was truly a magic day! Yes, I will take them!

Even as she was about to take the keys of her life and lock in her Vikram forever, she saw that the palm that held the keys had the marks of nails that had been pierced into them. My Lord! This is You! Her thoughts on the wings of light told her that Jesus Christ, her Lord, had died for her. The marks He bore, a witness.

’No, no’ she thought. ‘He died for me. My life is safe in His hands’.

Chitrangada turned, to tell Vikramaditya her decision. But lo, he had gone!

    A Maid to Order

    ––––––––

Her eyes were glued to the TV set. Was this for real, thought Rita.

    ––––––––

Rita was watching a film called, A Maid to Order. The story was about a thoroughly spoilt, rich girl, Rebecca, who had driven her father crazy by her temperamental ways. One day, after a particularly nasty incident, the widower dad stood by the window and looking at a star, wished his daughter had never been born! As it happened, his prayer was heard and Rebecca’s fairy godmother came down to earth to turn the straying child on to the straight and narrow path of life. When Rebecca returned from a late night party, her fairy godmother had taken her place at her home, as Rebecca.

    ––––––––

Her magic wand ensured that no one recognized the real Rebecca, who was not allowed in and shooed away by the housekeeper. She was forced to sleep the night away in the park. The next morning, the fairy godmother met Rebecca and explained to her that she would have to fend for herself until she mended her ways. She explained that her father did not want her in his house until then. To Rebecca’s dismay, she advised, Child, go and get yourself a job!

    ––––––––

What would she do, thought Rebecca. She had been partying away her life. There was really nothing that she knew to do. But she did need a place to stay. She made her way
