Names: value stream mapping (VSM), material and information flow mapping.
Uses: this paper-based diagram includes all the production and management processes, and allows users to take a step back from the current workflow and reorganise it to improve efficiency. It is used in process improvement analysis, process engineering and continuous improvement.
Why is it successful? In some sectors of industry and consulting services, this very thorough mapping tool allows users to visualise and understand the actions undertaken (by the company or an individual) between the moment the customer places an order and the moment they receive the product or service.
