    About the Author

    From the Author

WHILE Space Rebels does take place after Legendary, a lot has happened. In fact, an entire spin-off series known as The Fleet has happened. You can certainly follow up the last Gunship story with this one (and skip The Fleet). The choice is yours, and I've purposely made it that way. Some readers emailed in and said they were ready to move past Dalton James. Others wanted more of the legendary smuggler. So, if you're a fan of Dalton James, you might want to read The Fleet first and then return to this story. Otherwise, prepare yourself for another fantastic adventure!

    Part 1

OK EVERYONE, IF YOU could please take your seats.

Their teacher had a way of doing things. Just a shade over six feet in height, he had an average build and was notoriously calm. Avery had always been that way. He was quiet-spoken while garnering enough respect to get what he asked for without the need to ask twice. Even so, it took several minutes for the soon-to-be-graduates to shuffle around and find their seats in the large classroom.

Not too long from now, you'll each go out into our star system and make your mark. You will lead humanity into the future. Before you do that, I'd like you to hear from a man who's led us in the past. Today, just as I've promised, he said with a bit of emotion. I'm bringing in a special guest speaker that you won't soon forget. Without further ado, ladies and gentlemen, a man who was close to my father and who's looked after me for quite some time now. Someone who's a legend among many – Dalton James.

The classroom of nearly twenty students began clapping. Out of requirement, mind you. As did each classroom filled with students across the large Glimmerian University. It was visiting day and Avery's guest had been appearing for the last decade or so. Never with a single complaint from his students. In his mind, there was no better send-off for the future of humanity and other species than the insight of a man who'd stared death in the face so many times for his own freedom and gave death a mouthful of expletives in the process.

As Dalton James entered the large auditorium-style room, he showed both his age and experience. If they would have met him on the street, Dalton would have simply been the crazy old man. Every city has a few. He was nearly sixty and sported a thick beard of solid white with a look beneath it that could whip an ass or two all by itself. Brown cargo pants covered his bottom half, as did a thick pair of brown boots. From the waist up, Dalton wore a simple gray shirt.

Nice to meet you, Dalton said as he took a moment to flick his lighter and begin puffing an oversized cigar, taking the time to roll it properly and allow his lips ample pleasure. You little cocksuckers.

As expected, his statement drew laughs. Several students looked on with disbelief, as they always did. It was the same opening line that he'd used in every class he'd spoken to before. While the story always changed, his punchlines didn't.

Some of you might already know me, Dalton said. Glancing to Avery, he quickly understood that this younger generation knew very little of Glimmeria's earlier wars and their heroes. Well then. My name's Dalton James and I've lived a little. I once commanded a group of young men here on this rock and fought a few wars. They even put my ass in charge of the fleet, once upon a time.

Which fleet? a young man asked.

    The fucking fleet.

Dalton's admission drew several curious stares. Even the younger generation knew of the fleet, which had become something of textbook lore. To the students, the fleet was filled with pioneers and now one of its former leaders stood in front of them. There had long been peace within the Skyla System and, though humanity maintained a small military presence out of obligation, it wasn't anywhere near the size of the fleet of old. Back when we were hanging onto freedom by the skin of our teeth in the face of vampires, a zombie-like outbreak and so much political corruption that a man didn't honestly know which of the above mentioned was the worst. Back when tough meant something.

You shave off this beard and about thirty years and you'd have me in my prime. Hell, I never thought I'd see the day when hunters, husks and us humans all sat together in a classroom. Dalton admitted.

Sure enough, college-level kids of all species were seated. Their people had finally learned to coexist and it was a sight that befuddled a man who'd once seen so much war. He'd lived through the Wild West era of the Skyla System, so to speak.

I've killed hundreds of men, if not more, and that doesn't include fangers, either. Dalton admitted.

We're not really allowed to say fangers anymore. Avery said with a bit of a whisper. It had been recognized as a racist word against hunters abroad.

I don't give a shit, Dalton said loudly, which Avery had anticipated. It drew laughter from both the students and the son of his former best friend. I've been raising hell since long before you were born. There was a time when vampires called themselves fangers proudly. Hell, they were the baddest sons of bitches in the 'verse for a long damn time. Racist my ass, that term used to mean something.

    The room erupted with laughter.

When y'all see me, y'all see an old man who's beaten down and looks about as close to death as a man can get, right? Dalton asked.

No one formally replied though all of them thought it to some degree. He resembled a refugee who'd made the trip through a time machine, not that one had been invented.

"What each of you needs to understand is, us old folks have lived a long damn time. We're all filled with stories about how this classroom came to be and how our people started to get along after so many years of war and killing. Right here on this very patch of
