QUICK GUIDE: WHAT’S ON THE CARDS
The front of each card shows the card number in the set, the kanji character itself, and the related words using that kanji. The stroke order for writing it appears in the small boxes.
The back of the card tells you the reading of the kanji in romanization, and the romanizations and English meanings of the related words. There are usually 6 related words per card.
We’ve chosen words that are simple and memorable, yet usable—that is, words that are encountered in everyday life in Japan. The aim here is to move quickly beyond learning single characters, and begin to apply them in easy-to-use, real-life vocabulary.
The mnemonic phrase and image offer you a way to quickly remember the character and its pronunciation. Keep in mind that the role of mnemonics in learning is very personal; you may think of alternative mnemonics that will work better for you.
INTRODUCTION
Selecting and Ordering Kanji
Kanji were selected and ordered according to JLPT levels, from simplest (building blocks) to more complex, common/practical to more specialized. Volume 1 contains all kanji from JLPT Level 5 and many from Level 4.
These cards do not follow the Japanese school grade level classification because most non-Japanese adults would not necessarily benefit from following the Japanese educational curriculum for native children.
Our ordering reflects the common principle of learning the most common elements first, and then moving on to kanji made up of those elements. Many kanji in this series are built from previously learned elements. By learning the simplest kanji first, you can recognize their elements in more complex kanji. Recognizing meaningful parts helps you memorize complex characters better.
The example words for each kanji were selected primarily to reflect the most practical and common, and progress to the more specialized and challenging. They also include common idioms/ proverbial expressions, proper names, and antonyms that are used together frequently.
In selecting example words, we did not limit ourselves to the JLPT level of the particular kanji, and selected words that range from
