- Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5such an amazing book with clear step by step explanation
- Rating: 4 out of 5 stars4/5This is a comprehensive book on pattern cutting (and tailoring) techniques for a ladies jacket. The pattern cutting portion of the book is stronger than the tailoring/construction portion. The examples given are excellent and include step-by-step details and photos for drafting the various jacket patterns (including sleeves).
The draping section is good, but it is less detailed than the drafting sections. The tailoring/construction section shows lots of photos and descriptions, but does not describe HOW to do some important steps, such as the pad stitching for the front of the jacket. You may need to find a video source for this step.
The section on how to measure a person (or dressform) for your pattern is well covered. There are a few examples of fitting the jacket (once constructed) and how to make certain pattern corrections, but it assumes that your pattern was well-drafted in the first place and needs only minor corrections.
I was trained at Parson School of Design in patternmaking/ tailoring/draping. Worked as a patternmaker & draper for a NY designer then as a technical designer for womens ready-to-wear. I enjoy finding new, modern books covering these skills and this book was worth the time and effort to read.
I would definitely recommend this book for anyone wanting to learn jacket patternmaking, but there are better draping books out there. The construction portion is a good starting point for jackets but you will need to supplement these sections with additional instruction for certain details. Cabrerra’s tailoring book is the classic text for learning jacket construction. - Rating: 5 out of 5 stars5/5Excellent, thorough explanations of the process with lots of photos to illustrated, very well done.
