    CHAPTER ONE

THE RISING STRAINS of Mozart swirled around Violet like a strange dream as she stood on the moonlit walkway in front of the closed door. His door.

As she stared at the wooden barrier her blood fluctuated between icy then scalding. She now knew how Peter Rabbit must have felt when he entered Mr. McGregor's garden: frightened yet undeniably excited.

It had been two weeks since Draiper Sinclair moved into the apartment next to hers, though she had never seen the man let alone met him. In fact, nobody in the small complex had laid eyes on him, except for Mrs. Grundy the apartment manager. The old woman was convinced that Mr. Sinclair was a vampire!

Of course, Violet didn't believe a word of it. Just because the man led a solitary existence, was less than friendly, and chose to live his waking hours when everyone else normally slept, didn't make him a vampire. Vampires didn't exist anywhere in the world, and especially not in sunny California.

However, she did have to admit she was curious. Any person who had such an outrageous label pinned on him was worth a look. Besides, it was Friday night and there was no place she had to be.

Taking a deep breath to steady her nerves, Violet knocked on the solid door in front of her. Instantly her heart accelerated into high gear, slamming against her rib cage, pounding loudly in her ears.

Beyond the closed door the room became deathly silent, the orchestral music abruptly snuffed out. Footsteps, swift and sure, approached closer. A chain rattled on the other side. The knob turned. The door opened...a mere inch.

Yeah? Came a deep, disgruntled voice.

Damn! How was she supposed to get a look at this guy when he wouldn't even open the door? She then remembered her fabricated excuse for coming over in the first place.

Uh...yes, she nervously began, licking her lips that had suddenly become dry. I'm your next-door neighbor, Violet Kincaid. She gave a weak smile, though he probably couldn't see it through the minute crack he insisted on talking through.

    So.

Definitely a Mr. McGregor type. Violet wanted to turn around and leave. To forget about this reclusive grouch and the silly story that had been woven about him. There wasn't a doubt in her mind he wanted to be left alone.

Yes, she knew she should leave, but the way he continued to hide behind the oak door as if it were an iron fortress piqued her curiosity.

I was just wondering if I could borrow a cup of sugar? She produced a glass measuring cup from behind her back, holding it up for him to see.

Ran out. He started to close the door.

    Think quick. How about salt?

Salt? The closing motion of the door stopped a fraction before the heavy barrier would have clicked into place.

Yes, if you don’t mind. She swallowed the lump of shame she felt at making up an excuse just so she could pass some time and settle her curiosity.

For a moment, he didn’t answer. She was just about to leave when she heard a heavy sigh from beyond the dark crevice. Sure. Come in. Standing behind the door, he opened it wider, allowing her to enter.

Violet did so and was now convinced that he was a vampire, a mole, or blind, since his apartment was smothered in total blackness. Listening closely, she tried to follow the sound of his quick footsteps, noticing that in the dark he seemed to move with the surefootedness of a night stalking animal.

She groped her way along in the inky apartment until her fingers encountered something cool and smooth. Violet jerked her hand away. That something was gurgling! She then proceeded to find her way by walking very carefully, refusing to touch anything else.

No good. She tripped over something soft and furry. The furry thing shrieked and hissed. Violet yelped and landed on the floor—face first.

Damn cat, Draiper muttered. She then heard him walk over and switch on the light, bathing the room in a soft, fluorescent glow. You all right?

The voice above Violet was deep and silky. The hand offering her assistance felt strong, warm, and slightly callused. She found herself grateful for the small amount of light the aquarium offered, knowing she'd never make it as a mole, or a vampire, for that matter.

She ignored the sting of her left cheek as she was pulled to her feet and finally saw him. Feeling as though the wind had been physically kicked out of her lungs, she sucked in a much-needed breath. The man towering above her was absolutely... Intimidating? Mesmerizing? Sexy as hell? She swallowed hard.

    Definitely all three.

In the dim light, he looked almost menacing and she took a small step back, away from his overwhelming presence. He was a big, solid man dressed all in black; from his biker boots and snug-fitting jeans to his clinging T-shirt. His long, silky hair was dark as midnight, as was his one eye that stared intently back at her. His left eye was covered with a black satin patch.

Standing there like that, with those sharp facial features and heavy stubble covering his upper lip and chin, Violet thought he looked more like a pirate than a vampire. He was the kind of man that bodice-ripping dreams were made of.

Violet suddenly felt very hot inside. A heat that seeped between her thighs and had her nipples peaking as his ebony eye looked her over from head to toe. At that moment, she had a distinct feeling that her predictable life was in for some excitement in the form of Mr. Draiper Sinclair.

I ASKED IF YOU WERE all right, but since you're able enough to stand there staring like that, I suppose you're fine. Draiper's words struck out at her with all the bitterness he felt inside. She caught him off guard and it pissed him off. The look on her face was one he hadn't been prepared for. Never would have expected. She actually looked at him with lust in her eyes.

For shit's sake, Draiper, she only met you two minutes ago and can barely see you in this light. Get a grip. It's just because she's so attractive and you've been alone for so long, but solitude was your choice, remember?

Here's your salt, he said gruffly, shoving the cup in her direction, while he kept his guarded gaze on her. His brows felt welded together and his erection pulsed with unwanted desire.

Yes, he needed to get a grip. Being in seclusion for so long was causing him to lose touch with reality. What else could explain the intense and immediate attraction he felt toward this woman who was a complete stranger? Draiper mentally gave himself a kick in the ass.

He looked Ms. Kincaid over once again. She was nothing special—aside from the fact that her eyes were big and blue and beautiful, and her thick hair was the exact color of strong whiskey. Not that he'd been noticing. Draiper didn't notice things like that. Didn't want to. But if he did he probably would have noticed the way her pink T-shirt clung to her full breasts or the way her white shorts hugged her ample hips and thighs. But, he didn't notice. Not much, anyway.

Uh...thanks. She absently took the item from him while Draiper’s gaze remaining riveted. He knew he was
