    Chapter One

It was the end of September, and the weather was starting to cool off, but some days were still in the high eighties, which was cool for the Atlanta area. I was enjoying a great evening with my now fiancée Annabel Green and my partner Conner MacClennen and his girlfriend, Antonia Hitchens. We were celebrating the fact that Annabel and I had just got engaged. I still was walking with a cane from an incident that happened earlier this year, but I was getting better faster than the doctors hoped. I am not one for sitting around, so when they set me up with physical therapy I worked hard on my own to get better, faster. Mac was also shot, but it seems taking a gut shot would have been better than a bullet breaking a leg. At least I don’t have the halo on my leg any longer. Although inside my leg still has plenty of metal in it, but forward motion is all I care about.

We were eating at a nice Italian restaurant just north of Atlanta. It had been a good evening. As we were walking to Mac’s Suburban we were stopped by an older woman with dark hair, dark and beautiful skin, I could not tell the exact color of her hair since the parking lot was not lit well. She was around five-foot-six, slim and had a pretty face. Mac, have you got a second?

Mac turned to her, Tamera, sure. He turned to everyone and said, This is Tamera Wilson, one of the prosecutors for Fulton County. Then back to her, Are you stalking me?

No. She laughed, I was eating at the other end of the restaurant, I was going to call you in the morning, and thought I would just catch you very quick instead of calling you. I have an acquaintance that needs some help. Wanted to make sure you knew I gave her your number so you can give her a hand please.

You want to tell me what it’s about, Mac asked.

Not really, I would rather she tell you and you guys make your decision after talking to her yourself, she said.

Okay, Mac said. Have her give us a call.

Great, thanks and sorry for the interrupting. She said and turned to go back in the restaurant.

Annabel looked at me, A friend of yours? She asked with a look on her face.

I looked at her, Honey, I have never seen that lady before in my life. I know everyone says we are like Siamese twins but we are not. I do not know everyone he knows.

Mac started walking toward his truck again. Toni didn’t seem concerned, so we joined them in the truck. However, a few miles down the road she turned to me and asked, don’t you want to know how he knows her?

Not me, I’m more jealous of you than of her. I grinned at her.

Fine then, she turns toward him, well I wouldn’t mind knowing.

Without expression, Mac said, I was on the wrong side of the table with her a while back. Toni’s mouth opened a little. But it didn’t work out too well for her, and later she asked me to help with another case she had. I love the way he says things without any affect. I had moments, but this guy could pull it off every time if he wanted to. But to answer your real question, I never saw her socially.

That’s not what I was asking, Toni said.

Sure it is, and it’s okay. Some strange dude walks up to you and has any kind of conversation with you I would probably think the same thing no matter what the conversation was. This time he gave her a small grin.

We came to a stop light, and she leaned over toward him so she could kiss him. I said, hey, remember there are kids back here. Annabel gave my arm a love tap and laughed.

Toni turned again, Believe me that was a rated PG kiss. I’ll save the other ratings for later. She smiled a little devilishly.

Annabel reached over and put her finger under my chin because apparently, I had opened my mouth, so she helped me close it. Don’t worry honey, she said to me. We’ll make our own rating system later.

    My mouth opened again.

The next morning Mac and I were in our office, going through our usually routine of pressing the delete key on a ton of emails while we had some coffee and bagels, donuts are okay, but I always want to eat a dozen all by myself. This was my version of self-control, I had to have some in my life.

I was just finishing my bagel when the front door opened. A lovely woman poked her head in as if she wasn’t sure where she was going. It was just eight in the morning, which was sort of start our office hours, at least that’s what is on the door. She must have been waiting in the lot for time to pass. Mac and I both looked at her, are one of you Mac? she said still with her head in the door.

Mac said, that’s me, can we help you?

She brought her shoulder in a little, Tamera Wilson told me you might be able to help me? she phrased it like a question.

Mac walked over to the door, opened it the rest of the way, and took her hand. Please come in, and we can talk. She finally made it all the way in, he sat her in one of the client chairs in front of my desk, and he sat in the other one.

She sat there for some time in silence just looking at her hands. She was very pretty, but could not be more that twenty-four. She was slim, maybe to slim, with dark blond hair. She wore a wedding band. It was plain, just a thin gold band. She had very little make-up on, hair that was clean but could use a style. I have learned a lot since I met Annabel.

Mac reached for her hand gently, what can we help you with ma’am, he asked.

She reacted to the word ma’am. I’m sorry guys, I have never done this before. I am not sure where to start.

I took a sip of coffee, would you like a cup of coffee or something, I asked.

She shook her head. No thank you, sir.

Mac looked over at me with a slight grin, he knew how much I hated being called sir. Now I just shook my head. Okay, why don’t we start with your name?

Oh my goodness, I must have left my manners in the car. I’m so sorry. My name is Patricia Fairburn, she said shyly.

That sounds like a great beginning, honey, now you just continue whenever you are ready, and where ever you like.

She took in some air, I think my husband is cheating on me. I spoke to Tamera and she said you could probably help me.

Mac sat back and I took over. He was never happy taking possible divorce cases, not because of the fact that most of them were boring, but mostly because the idea of a person who stepped outside their marriage really just didn’t sit well with us and sometimes he goes overboard, especially when it’s the husband. Okay, I said, there are tons of private detectives in the metro Atlanta area, and many that don’t charge as much as we do. Why would Tamera tell you to come see us?

She said because he’s a vet you guys would care more than most, Patricia said.

I could see Mac in the corner of my eye turning red. That would make it even worse.

I said, you want to tell us why you think that?

She was starting to warm up. She looked at me this time. Since he’s been back he has been standoffish. He sometimes is gone for hours at a time, and when I ask him about it, he gets defensive and even downright ugly sometimes. I just don’t know what to think. She put her head down looking at her hands again. We only have had sex once since he got back and that was on the night of his return.

Mrs. Fairburn, I said. how long has he been back and where was he?

Please call me Pat, she said, he was in Iraq, and he’s only been back a couple of months.

I looked at Mac, he leaned in a little, It might not be another woman, honey. However, I think we can find out quickly for you.

She looked up and met his eyes, Really, so I might over reacting?

I can’t say for sure but you give us his info, and we will do our best to see what is going on, Mac said.

I handed her a notepad, and she wrote down his name, cell number and the make and model of his car. I looked it over and asked, is he working somewhere now?

Not right now but he’s supposed to start with a security company next week. I also worry he won’t be able to do that with him acting so funny, she said.

I hate to ask, but maybe we should discuss our rates, I said.

I have money, it won’t be a problem. Whatever you charge is fine. I just want my husband back please, she said.

Sorry, it’s just most military families don’t have any money.

I understand, but my family left me a lot.

So help me understand, why if you have money did your husband join the Marines, I asked.

She sat up a little straighter. Cole has always wanted to serve. I have known him since high school, and I asked him not to do this. I told him we have money, there was no need for him to go. But he told me he had to go. You see, he had an uncle working in the world trade center that day and even as a child he knew he wanted to join for his uncle. I didn’t understand it, but I wanted to be supportive. If that was his dream than I wanted him to have it. I hated it because he was shipped off so fast, we really didn’t spend that much time together after we got married. He assured me he would only serve four years and we would then do anything I wanted. She took a deep breath, I was hoping to cash in on that promise.

I handed her back the notepad, Leave us your info so we can give you updates.

If you could maybe send me an email and when I’m free, I will call you back. I don’t want Cole to suspect anything yet, she said.

Mac stood up, "we’ll be very discreet.
