The SPARK To START
It’s not how you start but how you finish that counts.
You’ve probably heard this statement one too many times. But think about it—you cannot finish what you don’t start. Finishing is contingent upon starting. Starting counts.
Is this your struggle? Do you feel like you’re always losing out to procrastination? Or perhaps you’re just unsure of how to get the ball rolling?
You’re not alone! Whether you’re prone to hitting your alarm’s snooze button when you should be out training for that half-marathon or you’re delaying quitting your office job to pursue your dream career, it’s no secret—starting can be tedious. It’s often when we encounter our greatest resistance.
Consider rockets. I’ve always been fascinated by their ability to take off into outer space—how can an object of its weight and size defy gravity so effortlessly? But, have you thought about the amount of fuel required for that momentous lift-off? On an empty tank, a space shuttle weighs close to 165,000 pounds. Add fuel and the necessary propellants, it’s close to 2,200 tons! The bulk of any space shuttle’s weight is the fuel—of which the majority is used for the moment of greatest energy expenditure: launching.
Similarly, it can take more effort to get going than to keep going. Starting may seem difficult, but once you’re off the launching pad, momentum will build. Sometimes all you need to start is a spark! The following chapters will equip you with the tools and strategies needed to master the ‘art of the start’.
Let’s get going!
1
Start With Initiative
Ask, and it will be given to you; seek, and you will find; knock, and it will be opened to you. For everyone who asks receives, and he who seeks finds, and to him who knocks it will be opened
(Matthew 7:7–8).
Without initiative, nothing happens. It’s an introductory act or step—a leading action. Many refuse to take this action because they’re waiting for answers, direction, and opportunities. But Jesus teaches us that we are also responsible for helping to materialize these—there’s no need to sit. How? Through asking, seeking, and knocking.
ASK, And It Will Be Given To You
Ask the right questions—for questions lead to answers, answers lead to decisions, and decisions lead to action. Questions are essential for producing the clarity needed to process your options. Investigate by asking yourself: What do I want to do? What steps do I need to take? What will be the cost?
This process may also involve inquiring of godly people for their counsel and advice. Question marks should be no excuse for delaying your first step!
SEEK, And You Will Find
Do you feel directionless? Be encouraged! You can find the direction you desire through actively seeking it. Even Paul on his missionary journeys didn’t receive the Lord’s clear direction until he intentionally pursued it. But the Apostle didn’t waste time waiting through this process—he kept moving in the direction of his calling. Similarly, keep moving! Napoleon Hill suggested—
If you need advice, seek out skilled experts, and pay them for their counsel. The
free advice you will get on every hand from colleagues and
friends will be worth exactly what it costs you: nothing.
Perhaps your pursuit of direction will also entail reading and learning. Friend, I encourage you to commit this season to educating yourself as much as you can about your unique, God-ordained calling. As you do, listen
