    INTRODUCTION

A healthy liver is imperative to life. If you want to lead a long and healthy life, you must take care of your liver. This large and very important organ supports a large number of other organs in the body. Weighing about 3 pounds in an average adult, the liver performs several essential functions: It detoxifies the blood. It stores nutrients (vitamin and iron) within the body, providing the tissues with the required energy and nutrients. The liver is also a gland because it produces bile, a vital substance for digesting fats.

We all need a healthy liver to survive. A normal, healthy and functioning liver is reddish brown in color. It rids the body of toxin, and helps it to burn excessive fat through the bile. It also helps to maintain a proper weight. On the contrary, a fatty liver is yellow in color, greasy, enlarged and of course, swollen with fat. Instead of helping to burn fat, it stores it. It is also unable to perform many other vital functions. The liver is the body's main detoxifying organ. Nevertheless, it can be destroyed by dangerous toxins in fatty liver.

Fatty liver simply means that there’s too much fat in the liver; much more than the liver can process. The result of this is an accumulation of fats in the liver cell, infiltrating the healthy liver areas and putting the liver in great risk. It is normal for the liver to contain some fat. However, if more than 5% to 10% of the liver’s total weight is fat, then it is called a fatty liver (steatosis).

Fatty liver is not a disease, but a medical condition that can become a disease as it progresses. This disease affects about one-third of American adults. It is also one of the major causes of liver failure. Fatty liver disease can also cause liver inflammation, permanent liver damage, liver scarring, liver failure and ultimately, death. Fatty liver can also increase your risk of heart attack.

    Types Of Fatty Liver

There are two types of fatty liver: Alcohol-related and non-alcohol related.

    Alcohol-Related

As the name indicates, alcohol- related fatty liver or alcoholic fatty liver is caused by heavy consumption of alcohol. Generally, excessive alcohol does the liver no good. It diverts it from focusing on its core function of metabolizing carbohydrates and supplying the body with glucose to metabolizing alcohol. By trying to break down alcohol, the liver can bring about some chemical reaction (oxidation) that can damage its cells, resulting in fat deposits. This causes alcohol-induced fatty liver disease. Drinking too much alcohol can result in inflammation (alcoholic hepatitis), and scarring of the liver (cirrhosis).

If, as a man, you are drinking more than 21 units of alcohol in a week, you are drinking too much. For women, drinking more than 14 units of alcohol per week is considered excessive. (One unit is about 10 ml of pure alcohol). If you continue to drink excessive alcohol unchecked for two years and more, you will develop fatty liver.

However, this first stage of injury to your liver can be completely reversed by abstaining from alcohol. But if you have liver disease, even taking the smallest amount of alcohol could worsen your condition. The most important change to make to your diet is to abstain from alcohol or reduce your consumption. You also need to eat a balanced diet, with adequate amount of protein and carbohydrate.

    Non -Alcohol Related

Non- alcoholic fatty liver is an
